Attending Duke as a member of the Class of 2019! Don’t worry about it if your dream school rejects you in early admission, you might just find out that it wasn’t your dream school after all. (Oh, and just want to jump in and say that the Harvard wait list totally shocked me, I was expecting a flat out rejection).
@detwylder : our results are kind of similar haha (I’m also part of the Duke Class of 2019!! B-) )
Accept: Rutgers (full ride), UNC Chapel Hill (Excel@Carolina), Duke
WL: Harvard (very surprised), Columbia, Harvey Mudd
Reject: UPenn, Princeton, Yale, Stanford (also my original dream school lol)
I went overboard on safety schools and should have applied to more reach schools lol. Well I’m out of state for UNC so I guess UNC and USC could be considered reach schools with their low acceptance rates. Anyway, I’m very happy with UNC and will probably be attending this fall
Accepted: UNC Chapel Hill, USC (in LA), Boston University, Fordham University, Santa Clara University, Baruch College, Temple University, Hofstra University, Hunter College, Brooklyn College, Queens College
WL: NYU Stern, Boston College
Rejected: Barnard College
@IBstudentDad You give me hope. I’m currently in the same situation your were in last year. Class rank #1, 4.0 GPA(UW), 4.9 GPA(W), lots of EC, but got a 29 on the ACT. Hopefully I can improve that by June. Even if I’m stuck with a 29, it seems like I can get into some pretty good schools. Congrats on your waitlist to UChicago. Most people get straight out rejected.
My advice to you all: it all works out! I was really disheartened after getting deferred from Princeton and UVA but I ended up with a ton of great options RD. I’m choosing between Duke and Dartmouth, leaning towards Duke!
Accepted: Rice, UCLA, UCSD, UC Irvine honors, UC Davis, UCSB honors, Arizona honors
Waitlisted: UChicago (along with everyone else who applied apparently), Georgetown (Second choice behind Stanford so actively pursuing), Swarthmore, CMC, Middlebury
Rejected: Stanford EA (broke my heart), HYP, Columbia, Dartmouth, Penn, Duke, Brown (see Stanford), Williams, Pomona, Bowdoin, Amherst, Carleton.
Rice class of 2019 but still trying to get off of the waitlist at Chicago or Georgetown.
ACT: 34
Lots of leadership and success in EC’s
Unique and well-written essays
Solid letters
but…
19/480 with a 3.8 and 4.3 which I think killed me because kids who got into top schools from my HS were top 7 in the class and weren’t as involved in the community. So kids focus on your GPA and take the easiest AP’s you can because my B’s were in AP Chemistry and AP Calculus BC neither of which were taken by the student who was accepted at Columbia, Duke, Penn, and Georgetown who instead took AP Statistics and Calc AB.
Accepted: STANFORD, Yale, Princeton, uMich, Berkeley, UCLA, NYU, Penn, Duke
Waitlisted: MIT
Rejected: Harvard( after deferral) crying because they are the only ones who didn’t see any potential in me :((
Looks like I’ll be attending Stanford (math+ CS major)
Being a rich Hispanic(half Asian) with a 2350 on Sat probably helped me a lot!
@tryhardalay First of all, congrats for such a great achievement. Do you think your Hispanic background a big hook for you? And is your Asian background apparent to the admission officers? Just curious. I am a parent of an Asian American kid.
@hzhao2004 Nice to meet you! Yes that’s a great question! My dad is Hispanic, my mom is South Asian. So my last name didn’t reveal my Asian background. My mom said there was discrimination against Asians which is true especially Harvard. Still idk Harvard is a crapshoot for all of us. Here are the rest of my Stats:
