What are your reasons for wanting to attend/ do attend George Washington University? Did it all work out great for you?

I have interest in George Washington University, and plan to major in international relations and minor in economics. I know George Washington University is known to be great in that field of study, and can offer a lot of internships etc.... for one attending.

I would like to know other students reasons for attending the university, and is everything going great.

I don’t go there, but it is far and beyond my first choice.

DC - DC is my favorite city. First of all, I love the atmosphere. It’s a modern city with a lot of history. It has downtown areas and touristy, grassy areas. It’s a tourist city, but there’s so much to do that tourists and I would never know about. I love that there are lots of free things to do and free places to hang out. DC is not too big or too small. It has some of the best public transportation in the country. This is important because I can’t/won’t drive and I’m an avid supporter of public transportation. DC attracts a lot of events, and maybe this is weird, but there is nothing more exciting to me than huge groups of people all together for the same cause. This is not to mention that DC is very international and very political - two of my favorite things.

Integration - GW isn’t just in DC, it’s integrated in DC. It’s not off on some hill (not like I’m talking about GT or anything) or placed in some fancy suburb (not that I’m mentioning AU, here). It’s right in the city, barely five blocks from the heart. GW uses DC’s resources extensively. The students, as I’ve heard, are definitely city-dwellers. They take advantage of it. The school itself uses its proximity to what’s going on (in many fields) to hire adjunct professors, search for and place students in internships, bring in guest speakers, host events for political and other bodies, etc. GW isn’t just about location. It’s about resources.

Academics - I thrive when I’m challenged, but not when I’m struggling. For me, it’s an interesting balance. I think that GW’s academics will be perfect for me. I don’t think I’ll be too overwhelmed, but I know I certainly won’t be bored. I am pretty sure that the rigor is demanding but not suffocating. Then again, I don’t go to the school, so this is hearsay. GW also offers a variety of programs I’m interested in, including numerous social sciences and languages.

Size - The campus itself was surprisingly small (I can’t imagine how almost 10,000 students live and study there), but the number of students is just the right size. 10,000 means lectures as a freshman and small seminars as a senior. I want a mix of large and small classes. Heck, I don’t even mind TAs (well… not for recitations, but I guess if they were teaching the entire class I might be peeved). My prefered size is 5,000 - 15,000, so GW is right in the middle.

Facilities - GW has excellent facilities from what I’ve seen and heard. The buildings I saw were all well-kept, if not old. The dorms are excellent (except for Mitchell…). The gym was one of the nicer ones I’ve seen. The student center was pretty good, too. Nothing super fantastic, but I was impressed (call it the “I Love GW” bias). I like that the meal plan is cash based and that there is a lot of variety.

On the other hand, it’s really expensive, has a really ****ty study abroad program (this is so dissappointing…), and does not offer a pure Arabic major. Uhh… I can’t really think of anything else I don’t like about it. The study abroad program is a pretty big FAIL though, and that is a serious fault. But it’s nothing I can’t deal with.

Nice to read all the great things about the university, though I’m really surprised its study abroad program isn’t well.

Coolbreeze, nice try, but I think you need to find your own definition of “Why GW” for your essay. Visit the school if you haven’t done it before. Then make your own “Why GW”

applicannot: I’m curious what you find lacking about the study abroad program. I didn’t study abroad myself, but everyone I know that wanted to did, and had a great time.

gwsenior,

I was under the impression that only the four programs were available. Upon closer evaluation of the website I’ve found more opportunities, including the North African / Middle Eastern sites I’ve been hunting down. So, it’s definitely not as bad as I thought. I stand corrected.

Multitasker what are you talking about? I didn’t know this is similar to GW essay at all. If this is similar to this years essay then I guess my question can be put on hold if it makes one suspecious.

You should note that although GWU is insanely expensive, they’re also one of the most generous in financial aid.

Coolbreeze, it is similar, it is in the supplement
