Your sleep

I've always came to the understanding, as a college student you will most likely have a improvement in your sleeping than high school. You may not find a sleeping issue as you've experience in high school, since you can manage your schedule with a reasonable time.

So, how truthful is this? Have your sleeping improved? Any differences etc...?

I go to bed even later than I did in high school (sometimes as late as 5:30am). Buuut, it’s not because of schoolwork. :x

It really depends on your own initiative. In high school I went to bed late because I fooled around until midnight, which is when I then started doing my homework. Now I go to bed late because I fool around all day and night.

You probably shouldn’t take any advice from me…

Um, I think it’s the opposite. I think you are more likely to have a sleeping problem in college.

I sleep a lot more, especially with the addition of naps.

I sleep so much more, and I think a lot of it has to do with how late I start classes (most days after 12:00 [1:00 next semester], which I do not plan, it has just worked out that way thus far). My schedule is very conducive to getting a lot of sleep, and I tend to do my work fairly early. Lately I’ve been having trouble sleeping so that keeps me up, but it has nothing to do with schoolwork/goofing off.

I’ve always heard the opposite to what you’re saying, but really, the only people I’ve met who lack sleep (at this point) are people who stay up until 3, 4 in the morning just goofing around every day, and then wake up at eight for class. At least they’re waking up, I guess. Or people who leave their 10-page paper until the day before. They don’t get a lot of sleep either.

Well I know in college a lot of students stay up until 3am etc… though even them I thought would still have a better sleep than high school due to class schedule etc…

My school starts a 7am and I have to catch my bus at 5:50am so I never get enough sleep and honestly, I think I’m becoming dumber because of it. I can’t wait until next year when classes start a 9am at their earliest and I can walk to them.

I get way more sleep now, because my earliest classes are usually around 11 AM. Then again, a lot of people always complain about how they don’t get any sleep at all, and I have friends who go to bed everyday at 5 AM. But I suspect that’s only due to poor time management skills.

i can definitely say i’ve had MORE sleeping problems in college than in high school. not just because i go to bed later by choice, but more because of the addition of a roommate to the mix. my roommate and i have drastically different sleep schedules and class schedules (ex: i have class at 9am and am in class, practicing, or at concerts until 9-10 at night most days, while she has class at 10 or 11am every day until about 2-3ish). because of this, she stays up until 4 in the morning or later most days, which keeps me up.

what i’m trying to say is, i don’t know anyone whose sleep habits improved in college, but maybe you’re the first. :)

In college, people have the OPTION of sleeping more hours. Because you only have to be in class a few hours a day, and often only 4 days a week, you can sleep as much as you like. However, most students (from what i’ve observed) don’t sleep regularly 8 hours each night, not that it’s necessary to be healthy. but you’ll have the option of sleeping 12 hours a day if you want lol.

I can tell you that I will be sleeping a LOT. I’m the kind of person that lays down for a “second”, and then wakes up 6 hours later. (I’ve done that about 3 times this week)

^ same here!!!

thats why i can never say, “lemme take a nap, then I’ll finish my homework/study for that test” b/c as soon as i close my eyes, i don’t wake up till its time for school

i sleep wayyy more in college, but still have problems waking up for class. (and it starts 3 hours later than it did in high school)!

I would go to sleep in high school around 12am and be forced to wake up by 7am. Now that I’m out on my own, I usually end up going to bed around 3am (due to my work schedule and homework) and wake up at 9:30 (I don’t have any early morning classes).

I’ve found that even though I go to sleep relatively late, I don’t need as much sleep as I did a few years ago as a teenager.

The only thing that improved is my ability to wake up in the morning and not feel drained.

On the aggregate, I sleep about the same amount as in high school (even though I didn’t sleep much in high school in the first place), but the variance is MUCH higher. Some days, I don’t sleep at all, and other days, I’d sleep for 12+ hours, while in high school, it was normally 4 to 10 hours.

But my commute to/from class is much shorter (15+ minutes by car vs. 10 minute walk), so I tend to wake up much, MUCH closer to class time. Next year when my classes will be a 15 minute bus ride away, I’ll need to work on this sleep thing. At least my classes don’t start before 2PM.
