Your Summer Job

So I'm curious, for everyone who's working this summer, what do you do? How much are you working? And how much do you get paid?

I'm working at rite aid (a pharmacy like CVS or Walgreens, if you don't have them where you live) as a photo clerk. Basically I develop the one hour photos and cashier. I'm doing about 30 hours a week (four 6-9 hour shifts), and I make $8/hour. In all honesty, it's not too bad. There's usually quite a bit to do, so time passes quickly, which is basically the only quality I really need in a job (besides decent pay, which this has too). It was tough for me to find a job, since I had no experience, but when I finally found something, it worked out okay. I do have to work at 8 a.m. tomorrow though. Blah!

So how about everyone else?

I've been working the lunch rush waiting tables at a semi-upscale local restaurant. I get minimum wage plus all my tips which usually come to between $400 and $500 per week. I actually had this week off because the owners decided to take a vacation.

Small computer store with 4 employees. It's cool because I get to learn how a small business runs, and the pay is good. I'm working around 50hrs week. That's what happens when you work for a small company.

I work at an ice cream parlor where I scoop ice cream, swirl yogurt, fill cakes, make waffle cones, and push a giant freezer on wheels (complete with big striped umbrella) containing random novelties up really big hills. I get paid minumum wage.

I'm a customer service clerk at Albertsons, which involves handling photos, video rentals, tobacco and alcohol and other random things, as well as regular customer service stuff.

the pay is crappy (seriously, I'm 18 and I'd probably make more at fast food), the hours aren't enough and the people are stupid. pretty much my job makes me want to shoot myself in the face.

long sigh it's still a summer job though.
and I'm going to look for an on-campus job once I go to school.

I work at a local law firm. I draft motions, applications, and declarations. I prepare the applications of the attorneys to receive compensation for their work. I get paid $10/hour but have an hour of overtime most every day (overtime is $15/hour). In addition to that daytime job, I do some of those aforementioned applications for fees and costs of an attorney most nights and that has, on average (because it actually pays on a graduated rate depending on the size of the case), an $80-$100/hour wage.

I'm a lifeguard at the university pools. Confession: I kind of watch the tanners more than the swimmers. I kind of like it. Boss is cool. At least I have a job and am making money. Even if it isn't a lab job. It's something.

i work at the courthouse as an intern making labels for folder jackets(the job i have right now) and i get paid $12/hr working 40hr weeks and this is my first job ever.(i'm 18) so basically $1000/2weeks w/o taxes

Any employment free of taxes is great. As it stands, my ~$900 paycheck gets over 20% knocked off by taxes. Luckily, my nighttime employment is completely free of taxation so that $80-$100/hour wage is free from Uncle Sam's paws (before any of you hound be about being a lousy American for not wanting to support Social Security, etc. with my tax money, understand that I'm only 17 and I have to pay for my second year at college so I have to keep as much money as possible before the Fall Semester).

holy crap...no taxes?!? that rocks. Like Welshie, I'm losing about 20% of each check.

Sounds like most of you landed pretty good jobs. Like I said, my job's decent, but I'd trade most of you any day :)

I work at an ice cream store, get $6.50 (it sucks), plus about $5 a day in tips, which doesn't sound like a lot but adds about a dollar to the hourly wage. Only about 15-20 hours a week, so I'm trying to find another job as well.

I work at a local fabric wholesaler. I work at their warehouse (just finished manually taking invatory of there mega warehouse (literally around 3,000 bolts of fabric) so that took 3 weeks with four people doing it - I work with my twin bro and two other college girls. I make $8 an hour (just got a raide from $7) and I work 34 hours a week - so with the raise, and after taxes, around $225 a week.

I wish I had a summer job! Or even a job in general. The job market is totally shot here in Connecticut, though, especially part-time/short-term positions. How did you all find your jobs?

i went into most of the stores anywhere near where I live and asked if they were hiring. A few were, but my whole lack of ANY experience kept them from hiring me. But at Rite Aid I'm told the main qualification was availability, and I certainly had some free time. So there you go.

I currently work at a movie theatre. Min wage with a very little chance of a raise. One guy who's leaving has been there for 5 years and only got a 35 cent raise. I'm still trying to get another job though. I only work about 20 hours a week but a few people are leaving so I'll get about 35 hours a week in a few weeks. That will bring my weeks pay from about 125 to 200 hopefully

i'm at nasa [sharp] - 8.10 an hour (not bad but not great...it's something, and the work is pretty good to even things out).

One of the owners is good friends with my mom.

Researcher at U.S. Naval Research Laboratory(government stipend$$)!

I'm at NASA SHARP too but the residential one. I think we get paid a little over $5 an hour but they pay us for 40 hours/week so it all adds up. Also, they pay for room and board, airline ticket, plus a bunch of other cool stuff so it is a pretty cool summer job.

I get to use over $1 million worth of equipment in my lab. Plus the experiments my mentors/I are doing have never been done before so we're looking for promising results and hopefully I'll be coauthroing the paper. I was thinking about doing NASA SHARP but I liked the conveniance of being at my house for the summer so I just commute to D.C. everyday which isn't thaaat bad.
