Your thoughts

One of our children is currently attending a prestigious "Southern Ivy" college. He has also been accepted as a sophomore to Cornell. He seems happy where he is at and is a bit uncertain of his major, although he is currently following a premed track. Should he accept the transfer option to Cornell? Probably the one selling point of Cornell at this point is that it is Ivy League. What are your thots?

academic answer: if pre-med is the ultimate goal, he should attend whichever school will give him the higher GPA for med school admission

“fit” answer: if he is happy, that, to me, would be the ultimate goal and I, personally, could care less if it’s an Ivy, a “southern Ivy”, or a state school…

back in the day…my older sister was also given the opportunity to enter ILR as a sophomore. she ended up loving the school she was in (still a highly ranked school) and decided to stay there. now she is in a great law school. in the end, it really doesnt matter. the premed program at cornell is very intense. i wouldnt transfer schools just because it is “ivy league”. i applied to cornell because of the architecture program, and cornell just happened to be in the ivy league. i didnt make that a factor in my decision

good luck to your son! hope he makes the right choice!

I transferred to Cornell this year as a sophomore and it was one of the hardest decisions I had to make. Along with the other transfer friends I have, it came down to our experience at our last school. I had a very unfulfilled freshman college experience both socially and academically. The transfer option to Cornell let me start over at a place I had dreamed of attending for years. I am so happy I transferred and am enjoying my time here to the fullest.

When it comes to your son’s case, it sounds like he is enjoying his college experience very much. The fact that Cornell is an Ivy League should not be a factor as much in his decision. It should depend on if he has friends, likes his classes, and getting the most out of his education. Cornell is a great place and I am sure your son would be very happy here but he also may be more stressed! Believe me, it is a different level of competitiveness.
