I can't narrow it down to five. -___-

Pain of Salvation/Dream Theater:
[PoS] Brilliant, thought-provoking lyrics and amazing technical skill, yet they still manage to not sound absurdly pretentious. Also incredibly melodic and therefore catchy as hell.
[DT] Yeah, yeah, Petrucci wanks. He deserves that privilege. Also, they're the band that got me into music. Seriously.

Opeth: Mikael Akerfeldt is a genius. He does amazing death metal growls and has a beautiful singing voice as well... plus he's a brilliant composer.

Damien Rice: So intense and beautiful.

Battle of Mice: Female-fronted post-hardcore? Yep. Intense stuff; catchy; never gets old.

The Dresden Dolls: Also female-fronted, but of an indescribable genre. Great stuff.

...Porcupine Tree, Basshunter, Citizen Cope, Megadeth, Death Cab (lolz), Snow Patrol (lolz), Mesh, 3, Cannibal Corpse, the Shins, Between the Buried and Me, Thrice... yeah I'm all over the place. And I clearly can't do five. See poseurlol's Music Profile - Users at Last.fm if you care.

I know I commented in your Brown thread already but YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dream Theater, BTBAM, Agalloch, and Opeth are all probably in my top 15 bands and I'm also really loving Thrice's new one.

My favorites:

Dream Theater
Mastodon
Protest the Hero
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
The Mars Volta
Converge

As of know:

Weezer (old stuff)
Blink 182
Beck
Arcade Fire!
MGMT

HAHAHA that's so funny, I totally mentioned BtBaM in the other thread!

You are amazing. I've heard tons of good stuff about Protest the Hero but never checked them out. Any recommendations?

1.Queen
.

.
2. Rush
3. Red Hot Chili Peppers
4. The Who
5. Blue Oyster Cult.

I love Classic rock.. if you can't tell.

heh heh, this is really funny. I recommended PTH in the other thread before I saw this. They're definitely the band I would tell you to check out first. If I start going into other ones the list would be a mile long...but just to drop some names: Death, Strapping Young Lad, Amon Amarth...

I know some SYL and I actually have Devin Townsend's "Ocean Machine: Biomech." Actually, I'm gonna listen to that now; I haven't listened in a while and it's excellent. Do you have any Ayreon, speaking of Townsend? They're sooo corny but omg is The Human Equation brilliant.

I have a bit of Amon Amarth; they're lots of fun. XD

For some reason, I don't have any Death, even though they're CLASSIC. Gotta get on that.

...Wow I need to get off of CC. (I know I'll be back in like ten minutes.) We're gonna be sending each other lotsa music over AIM tomorrow, k? >:]

u no it

I have The Human Equation but I'm not a huge fan :(. The story is great but the instrumentation is boring to me, for the most part. I really like Loser, but that was written by Devin Townsend so it barely counts.

heh too lazy to list the whole songs and lyrics description, but here are my top 5 CURRENT favorites

1.MGMT (I too just recently discovered them and cannot stop listening to them)
2.Bob Marley/The Wailers (Best thing to listen to when doing work, just so relaxing and clears my mind of any distractions from my work)
3.State Radio (reggae-ish type of music, the lead has a sick voice)
4.Matisyahu (although he preaches too much judaic philosophy in his music, an original sound nonetheless, reggae/hip hop mix)
5.Modest Mouse (Always been a huge fan, listening to the latest album: GREAT)

Good stuff. Dream Theater is awesome. If you like Opeth, check out Meshuggah. You might like Mudvayne too
