how long is it?

590 words :)

752 words, though I absolutely butchered mine. Went from 2250 to 752, and I lost so much content from it.

thanks guys! mine is currently 555 words…probably around 600 with final paragraph. i was worried because i’ve heard that some people get REALLY intense with these essays and write a short novel.

Anyone who writes a short novel for his college admission essay had better be OK with having written a short unread novel. It really isn’t fair to ask admissions people to read more than 3-4 pages. They have a lot of stuff from a lot of people to get through, and you (and they) want them to give quality attention and thought to each application. That just wouldn’t be possible if everyone were writing endless essays.

You really can show your stuff in a couple of pages. If you write a lot more than that, make the first couple of pages great, because there’s a good chance that’s all anyone will be able to pay attention to.

650 words. I probably could have cut it down to around 550 but IMO it would have lost some vitality/quirkiness that I thought UChicago would want to see.

There are people who say they got in with 1,000-word essays and others with <500-word ones. I’d say 500-750 is a good window (although you should always try to avoid redundancy.)

For those who submitted EA, wanna trade essays?

I have one really busy month in which to write the remaining half of my essays… about fifteen (but some of them are really short, so I did half by word count, not by quantity of essays themselves). All of my hardest essays are left, including all my WHY essays, Rice’s stupid diversity essay, and UChicago’s essays.

My extended one was 625. It could have been longer, I guess, but I couldn’t really extend it.

Hmm so my Why Chicago one was long… 744 words. My “extended” Got Caught essay was only 313 words. My last Favorites essay was 693 words.

A wise counselor once told me to use as many words as I need to convey my passion, without diluting the meaning, making it a boring essay, or making it excessively long.

Last time I edited it, it was 490+ or about 1 page and 1/4th. I’m trying to make it really speak to why I wanna apply. =p

I thought it was very strong.

Mine is 554.

760 words. 792 with the prompt. It was about 2.5 pages. heinochus, what exactly do you mean by quirkiness? I can’t decide if my essay was “quirky”.

^something like this?
“Don’t ever let yourself be put off by something that looks too weird or difficult to eat, not even a geoduck.”

I want to write my (extended) essay on seafood… ='D

What are your essays about?

How closely did your essay match the prompt? I started out writing for the prompt, and then loved it, but at the end decided the fit was a little bit of a stretch. Mine is standing at just over 1000 but it hasn’t been revised or edited yet.

Son’s “why Chicago” was 325 and “Got Caught” was 550 in the versions on my computer - I know there were some revision made after the versions I saw though.

Last spring (I think) a whole bunch of applicants posted their main essays on line. They were (mostly) quite interesting, I don’t think any of the ones posted were too long.

I wrote mine on the Human Personality question (the one with the Martin Luther King quote). It’s not even a page long xD I think I need to extend it a bit, but I feel like I’ve covered all the necessary points already…

Are your “Why Chicago” interesting and imaginative? Or is the essays just a well-written (hopefully) essay incorporating facts about Chicago and your interests?
