Anyone have any stories where their stats weren't as high as the average for top UC schools yet with their EC's and essays, it got them in? Maybe a long-term commitment? What did you do that made you stand out from the others that was better than you in grades and SAT scores?

I know someone who got into UCLA with 1010 SAT (out of 1600) good GPA and no ECs. Oh and he was hispanic...

Well you can get into UC with low SAT-- that is just not considered of primary importance. GPA is, though. dd was accepted with 4.0 UC-weighted at UCB. I'm not sure how unusual that is, just that it is lower than average, but still high considering from a rigourous private school--I just didn't know if they considered that. She had a high SAT, though. I figured that she was a squeeker because she was sent a low-income form (I was mostly unemployed for the previous year.)

Oh, and I consider that the EC's and essay got her in.
