Your views on our generation

@smorgasbord:
I think people that say people are overrated are overrated.

Who rates people who say people are overrated? I want to rate people who say people are overated too.

^ Count me in.

You mean… the ones who invented the internet, created earth day, gave us the sexual revolution, made enormous strides toward racial and gender equality, and ensured that we had the strongest economy in the world for decades (oh. They also gave us pretty sweet music)?

Anyway. The reason that we’re looked down on is the same reason all younger generations are looked down on. We’re seen as spoiled and lazy. Which we are (although those who grew up in the 80s were moreso IMO). We have the internet at our fingertips but we use it to find funny cat videos rather than be productive. We have cheap and plentiful food that could sustain us and we chose to get McDonalds which is going to kill us one day. And we’re the worst when it comes to wanting bigger, shinier things.

Until we produce people that are productive (which won’t happen for a while because we’re in our 20s/teens), we will be looked down on. That simple.

I don’t think our lazy genes will allow that…

^^ I like how creating earthday is one of their major accomplishments

^ It was in response to the part about the environment.
They have also given us hybrid cars, improved gas millage in general, stricter environmental regulation, the list goes on.

True but our generation is still young, we have many years ahead of us to makes major accomplishments. I have great hope in my generation. But time will tell.

Ours will be of the Revolution.

^Speaking of that, its really crazy in the Middle East and North Africa, all these revolutions. I feel like one in Mexico is possible sometime in the near future also.

futurexecutive is sort of right…and it’s sickly egotistical to believe that the world will end with us. That we’re, for some reason, the final act. I might sound like I’m twisting things up, but you can see the arrogance in the ‘evidence’ of impending doom that’s posted all over the internet (evidence that often depends on one terrorist attack from 10 years ago). But we’re kids and we’re people!

I do think our egos are inflated and there’s a general sense of entitlement among our group, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. We need inflated egos to believe that we can change the world somehow. Also, our generation is full of brand new adults…we haven’t done much yet but be raised with everything (tech, info, food, health care, shelter, ideas, media) within reach.

Though, there is the Middle East. I don’t know if anyone is giving specific credit to Gen Y for the event in Egypt, but I know I’ve heard praise for the Egyptian “youth”. I am in awe of it all, really, especially the link to Facebook. Facebook is ours (can we count Zuckerberg as a Millennial?), and I swear it will be in history books by name.

That’s what exactly my 2 siblings do! One started to use the computer at 4. The other is currently 3 and can browse the web like a mini-wiz!

I’m scared for my generation.[Answers.com - What percentage of high school graduates go to college 2008-2009](<a href=“Answers - The Most Trusted Place for Answering Life's Questions”>What percentage of high school graduates go to college 2008-2009? - Answers)

^Our generation has the highest amount of children going to college, and the highest amount graduating ever. So how are you scared?

I find that, generally speaking, our generation is much more politically moderate than our parents’ generation, which seems to be immensely bipartisan as a result of postwar politics and other various factors.

I, for instance, cannot say that I am completely aligned with any of the current major parties.

^I don’t think that’s true. This generation just cares about different things, and so the party divisions as they are don’t really reflect how this generation is divided. But I think that’s been true to a certain extent of every generation.

I agree with TCBH. I am politically independent and not aligned with either party. However, I am NOT moderate.

I am…
-a radical socialist revolutionary.
-fiercely pro-life (anti-abortion)
-fiercely pro-life (anti-death penalty)
-fiercely pro-life (anti-war)
-resentful of the power control of a two party system
