You're deferred, now what...

My friend got deffered, became a double state-champion in speech, and got in RD. If you can win two state championships, it seems to improve your chances considerably ; )

Altho I still haven't got my letter yet, I know I'm getting defered anyway. So better get ready for RD app. Can I resubmit my SFS essay? I don't like the one I submitted for EA. I have a better one now.

^Which categories? I'm also a double-state champion in Prose and ODec, so I'll see if that helped come monday, :).

I seriously doubt you can resubmit another SFS essay...if you can though i will for sure lol
lol and now what indeed, i'm trying to work on other applications but it's not working >.<
And no one really seemed to get how bad I wanted to go. I called my parents and told them when I got the email and they just said, "oh, that's it?" And i started crying and they just said that it didn't matter and I could always get in later, and anyways, they didn't really like GU and then I facebooked my best friend, and she responds like a year later saying "OH, i'm so sorry! I don't really know what to say, we'll have fun tonight!"...ah and then she doesn't bring it up all night, when I've been talking about GU non-stop for the past 6 months >.< ...great.

I feel your pain, swiss.

my parents haven't really liked georgetown as much as I did. When I got my deferral they just shrugged...

don't be too hard on your friends though. my guess is she was trying to be sensitive and not make you feel worse.

For those who got want to send a letter of interest, really search around on the georgetown website and find specific things that you can talk about that related to why you want to go. Go to explore.georgetown.edu to talk about specific classes you want to take, go to sac.georgetown.edu for student clubs you want to join, or csj.georgetown.edu for social justice groups you're interested in. Talk about the jesuit identity if it means something to you etc...Make sure they know why Georgetown and not any other school is the perfect place.

If the envelope appears to have only 1 piece of paper then it is a deferral??? Is that how I understand it?

^I believe so, yes.

An acceptance should have 2 white slips and one blue slip for Housing info, A deferral just has one.

just make sure any letters you send to admission about still wanting to go are believable and realistic. just expressing strong interest is a good start. Saying "i really want to go to georgetown because it is the only school where I can take THEO-050-01 with professor ruf who has written so many books about phenomenology" or "the reiss center looks like an unparalleled place to study science" is probably not a good idea.

You can take SAT IIs in January only as retakes.

What Mario-Vaz says is true - strike a balance. Incidentally, I took that theology class and it was awesome..haha. My sister got deferred last year and she wrote a super specific letter and got in RD but who knows what the impact was.

Interesting to read that GTown prefers a "Go Hoyas!!" letter than one that would show that the student has identified some specific areas that they are interested in and that have caused them to choose GU. So I suppose it is possible that my sis getting deferred from GU (her top choice) probably had a lot to do with the fact that she did a ton of research on why GU was a good match for her, and then mentioned that info as part of her Why GU essay. For RD elsewhere, I will tell her to just say "Go Eagles" or "Go Crimson" or "Go Blue Devils" or whatever....

when you send this letter of intent, does it become binding? I am 95% sure that Georgetown is my top choice, but im still waiting on a couple others in case i have a sudden change of heart. Also, can I put information in this letter that I wasn't able to fit into the application (AP scores, certain awards, specific community service hours). Thanks to anyone who can help..

hoyasaxa13, what letter of intent are you talking about? i didnot get anything like that in my deferred envelope.

A year ago tonight we were bummed out by our daughter's GU rejection letter. She decided to turn her attention elsewhere and didn't follow up in any way with Georgetown. She subsequently got in RD at Harvard and Yale . . . and Georgetown. Then she was offered a merit scholarship by the Arabic Department at GU. Go figure. But when they say that your application will be reviewed by an entirely different committee for RD, they're apparently not kidding.

no one ever said to write a "go hoyas" letter...

hoyasaxa, the letter is not binding. you write the letter to express continued interest in Gtown, and that it's your top choice (if it is). Put in anything that developed since your deferral. It's basically an update of information on yourself that you think is important for the application. Show how this information is related to why you're interested in Gtown and why it's your top choice.

Yeah, no one said to write a go hoyas letter..It sounds like your sister wrote a great essay about how Georgetown specifically would fit her.

they really have a totally different committee read your application again?

I thought it's just one admissions officer that looks at an app.
