Stop freaking out about every little detail you can't change. Stop asking whether something that already happened will affect your admissions chances. It doesn't matter. What's done is done... focus on what you can change - focus on continuing to do well.

I see a lot of seniors come in here and say "I got these grades" and asking if it will affect their chances of going to their dream school. Just chill out. You're asking a bunch of people who are just like you - young, scared, and totally uninvolved with the college admissions process. The answer might be a little comforting or a little reassuring, but ultimately there's only one answer that's going to matter to you.

And you know what? Even if you don't go to your dream school, you're going to be okay. I know you guys hear this all the time and don't really buy into it, but take it from me - and I applied to Yale two weeks ago, for what it's worth - but where you get in life is a function of how motivated and able you are, not where you go for your four years of undergrad.

Seniors, we've spent all our lives working to this moment. Take a step back and enjoy it. You're applying to college. Your record is what it is... let it stand and stop second-guessing your past.

So please, for the love of god, stop posting threads about your the problems in your transcript/SATs/ECs/whatever that ask "how is this going to affect my admissions chances at DREAM SCHOOL X????" You're going to be okay.

I agree with you. Some of the kids on CC are insanely motivated and intelligent. Even if they get rejected from every Ivy, those kinds of kids can still do whatever they want with their lives and be successful. And when you get into the real world nobody will care about your skin color, whether you play the oboe, or where your parents went to college; you will succeed on your own merit.

somefreakingbody who actually knows what he's talking about.

I honestly am very worried about the college app., but only because of my family's financial issues. I need to get into a needblind school like HPYS or MIT - which are all pretty harsh on international students - only because I don't want to go to Iowa or Iowa state. But seriously, if my family was rich, I'd have no problem going to UIUC or something.... Alright I give up, I ****ing want to go to MIT!!!

I'm like 80% sure I'll get into Lehigh, but I'm so nervous. Nervous about stupid crap. So what if I don't get in? I'll just have to deal with going somewhere else!

You're right, I guess. I should forget about the nasty 78 I got in Honors World History last year...it was freshman year, big deal. Move forward, improve, so on. That's what I should tell myself.
I like that you offer a piece of sanity, and I completely...what am I saying? I'll cry if I don't get into Dream Schools X, Y, or Z (NYU, Columbia, or Cornell). Sigh. Tis the way of me.

Very sound advice, khaki though I think most CC-ers (myself included) can't quite bring ourselves to completely listen to it just yet. Not until mid-April in any case.

However, I fully believe hindsight is 20/20 and in a few years, most of us will completely believe in what you're saying.

I'm so glad I've stumbled onto this thread, I haven't visited the Admissions board in a while until I was bored..
