Its January and the future is beginning to take shape.
Before the last semester I made a thread listing about 20 schools I was applying to and asked which ones the people here thought I could get into given my academic credentials.
Anyway, I've taken alot of the advice given to me here and I've come down to a few schools.
First I should post my credentials again

And the schools I'm going to definately send all my materials to within the next couple of months are:

Cornell
Brown
Holy Cross
Colgate
Northwestern
Bucknell
Boston College
Rutgers (Safety School, REALLY don't want to go here as I feel I could have easily gotten in out of HS and the adventurous side of me wants to travel)

If you could, just place a Y/N by each school. Y if you think I'll get accepted based on the information I've provided and N if you think I'll be rejected.

I should also mention that for my Cornell application, I made an error at the end of one of my essays where one of my sentences was unfinished and I moved on to the next sentence. I rarely make mistakes like that but I was rushing and didn't proofread.

Thanks alot. I'm really worried that I haven't done enough to get into these schools (other than Rutgers)

about the cornell essay thing, if you’re applying for fall, you didn’t submit yet, so you can still change it, right? just fix it and you should be okay. for cornell, brown, and northwestern, i think your gpa is low, but your URM status may help you if you can write really strong essays. your SATs are also low, but unless you need to submit your scores, i don’t suggest retaking them.

I submitted the essay back in September, and I think I wrote much stronger essays for the other schools, I think the ones for Bucknell, Brown, Colgate and Northwestern were particularly strong. I figure Cornell, Brown and Northwestern are extreme reaches, but like everyone else, I’m hoping that this might be a year where there are alot of spots available and a less competitive field of transfers so I have a better shot.

Should also mention that I feel slightly uncomfortable with my situation and am also looking for suggestions for other schools that I should apply to

And I hate to keep posting again and again but seeing as I can’t edit this in, I needed to ask you a question ironicallyunsure.

Seeing how I’ve already botched my Cornell application do you think I’d have a better chance at Columbia if I applied there?

i just suggested these schools to someone else, but you could look into bu, urochester, urichmond, and uva.

i still don’t understand how you’ve submitted to cornell because i thought for fall their filing period is feb - march, unless you mean you applied for spring, in which case you can always apply again (i was accepted as a reapplicant). also, you can call up and tell them you’d like to submit a newer, corrected version because you realized you sent the wrong one. i think your chances stay the same because columbia doesn’t know that you’ve submitted cornell and vice versa. i say apply to both because hey, you never know :)

I think Richmond and UVA look like great choices. But they might not be able to provide the FA I need even if I somehow got in.
I mean I submitted the common application already, way back in September along with the Cornell supplement. I didn’t apply for Spring because I didn’t realize you could reapply, so I only applied for next Fall.
But according to you I can call them up and send them a paper copy of my supplementary essay and tell them to disregard the one I sent over common app? That’d be great! I’d feel alot better

wow, my stats are extremely similar to yours except I’m not a male, white, Hispanic haha, and my GPA is a little higher

I agree with you, Rutgers is my last choice too… which I still have to finish the application, didn’t realize the deadline was next Friday! anyway here’s a list of schools im applying to if it gives you an idea :P

Columbia University
New York University
Cornell University
Carnegie Mellon University
University of Chicago
Brown University
University of Pennsylvania
Boston College
University of Virginia
Rutgers University

Also, I think Columbia University is harder to get into than Cornell actually… but just make sure your essays are REALLY GOOD

yup! also, i don’t think they have that one on file anymore, as i had to start an entirely new application over the second time around, so you may have more room to change things than you think. if it’s easier, you could just ask them to chuck the old version in the bin as long as you can get a whole new app in during the new filing period.

edit: hi seriouslyd. i can see if i can help you out too if you give me your stats/what you want to major in/credits completed/etc. columbia is harder to get into because they take less people, but getting into cornell depends on what college within cornell you apply to and what major, so it varies quite a bit in terms of difficulty getting in. but i agree, essays are key for admission to cornell.

@ironicallyunsure oh thanks!
my current gpa is 3.81. Would it be really hard to get into CAS for an Asian studies major?

I’ve taken basically all the core classes in community college with 31 credits completed, all A’s and one B in Precalculus (argh…), and I’ll be finished with Intermediate Japanese 2, Calc 1, Statistics and some other probably transferable classes after spring 2010.

a 3.8 would put you in the running, but i don’t know much about your major. there’s an exclusive asian-something studies major that’s only something like 20 kids, so if you’re talking about that then i have absolutely no idea how transferring into that program works. if that’s just a regular major, if your essays are solid, you would be in the running. how are your SATs and high school stats?
