youth symphonies

hey!

wat r the best youth symphonies around here (california)? what about the whole us? do college people know the difference?!

Yeah colleges definately know the difference.
I dont live in California but the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra (CYSO)and Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra (GBYSO) are two of the nation's best.

thanks

what about NY youth symphony? or san francisco youth?

are they ranked anywhere?

sorry to be nagging

where in california?
san francisco, orange county, and some parts in northern california have good programs. i live in san diego, and we have a few youth symphonies.

Dear n_s,

I PM'ed you. (And yes, many admissions committees make it their business to know the different reputations of the different youth orchestras.)

I just finished 4 years at the CSUN Honors Youth Philharmonic, which takes students from all around Los Angeles. I honestly believe we are one of the top 2 or 3 full youth orchestras in Los Angeles. One of my junior friends plays in the Orchestra De Camera at Coburn in Downtown L.A. and they are also another fantastic group.

if you're in northern california (more specifically the bay area) there are lots

the most prestigous is SFYO. it's pretty much impossible to get into unless you're INSANELY good at your instrument

here are the major youth symphonies ranked according to how hard they are to get into

1) SFYO
2) OYO (oakland)
3) YPSO (young peoples' string orchestra)
4) BYO (berkeley)
5) YASO (young artists' string orcehstra)
6) CCYO (contra costa youth orchestra)

those are teh only ones i personally know of / have experience with

hope that helps :)

what about the Santa Rosa Youth Symphony! anyone heard of them?

thanks for all the input, everyone! it's so nice to see so many CC musicians.

yes, MUZICMANn8, i live in the bay area :)

have you heard of the BIGGEST (if i'm not mistaken.....hm...) one, MYSO? (milwaukee y.s.orch)

I would say YPSO is harder to get into. I auditioned for OYO and it was very easy to get into and the conductor gave no feedback on your performance. The YPSO conductor seem much more passionate and it was very difficult to enter.
