you've got questions, i've got answers.

ask this alumna anything, from the admissions to the academics to the social life to the post grad opportunities, and receive a completely honest answer on the good, the bad, and the ugly about this lesser known top tier LAC.

Huskem,

Is the Conn College art department any good?

i honestly dont know enough about the department to give you a good answer. I do know that there are some extremely talented professors and students in the program, and it is a decent size department. One of my best friends was an art major, i think overall she was satisfied.
The art building has great facilities, and as an art major, you will have access to the building as well as your own studio 24/7.
I'm sorry i cant give you a better answer!

What is New London like? Mystic Seaport? How far from College?

How is college for fin aid? Scholarships?

Train Sta near school? Need to travel to and from New Haven CT and Long Island. Ferry from New London to Long Island? time, convenience?

Selectivity? No Ea, only ED? We hesitate on ED since we most likely will need fin aid. But the website says kids applying ED have much greater chance of being admitted.

We will be there in less than a month but would love to learn as much as we can beforehand.

Thanks

new london itself isnt the nicest town, but there are some cute coffee shops and great restaurants. however, the area surrounding new london is great. mystic is a gorgeous quaint town 10 minutes away, and you can get student discounts at the nationally renowned aquarium and seaport. waterford is 5 minutes from conn, and you have all your major shopping there- a decent mall, and a huge brand new shopping plaza with all the stores you'll ever need. new london does have great public beaches about 10 minutes from campus, and during the fall and spring, a lot of students hang out there. you're also 40 minutes from new haven, 45 minutes from hartford, 45 minutes from providence, 90 minutes from boston, and 2 hours from new york, so people often take day trips to those locations. but there is so much to do on campus all the time that people dont need a car to do things.

i found conn's financial aid to be terrific- they offered me a merit package that i couldnt refuse. plus, the summer between your junior and senior years, they'll give you $3000 for a summer internship.

the train station is 5 minutes from campus, which is like a $6 cab ride, although you'll never have a problem with finding someone willing to give you a ride.

conn's ranking is elusive. its dropped about 12 spots since i started as a freshman there in 2000, even though the stats are pretty much the same. the average sat score is about a 1350, although the sat is optional. its actually rated the 25th most selective LAC in the country based on pure admissions numbers- the main reason why its ranked relatively low is because it ranks 100th in faculty salary. despite this, the faculty is overall terrific, extremely intelligent yet very approachable. its not uncommon for professors to invite their classes over to their house for dinner.

thank you huskem55 .....You are the first and only person to shed light on Conn College for us ............It looks like a terrific school and my d and I are looking forward to visiting in Nov.............we were just afraid it maybe too much of a reach. We await the results of her new SAT scores from 10/8/05 ....we should know by 10/24/05 but her transcript is strong.

We shall see ..........she is going to apply as a reach RD and see what happens.

Thanks again

if her SAT isnt great, she has the option of submiting 3 SAT-II tests instead

oops! I did not know three SAT II were required........thought it was two. Most schools ask for two. I'll have to read over the application packet again.

She has US History 780 and will be taking the Literature Subject test 12/3/05.( expect high score since English and writing is her strongest subject)

There is no time to take a third one and w/ all the essays and applications and visits it seems too much.

I know they are SAT optional. She will wait to see what her SAT retake from 10/8 score is, I believe it is available by phone this Monday.

She is also scheduled to take it a third time 11/5 if needed.

I probally would not advise her to send it unless it is a high 1300 or more.

Does this sound like the right #? I believe I read the mean was mid 1300+ for past students accepted.

If a third SAT II test is required she may not apply. I will definately check that out.

PS I also read that they are well regarded for international studies and have wonderful study abroad programs. Did you take advantage of any while you were in college there?

How are the dorms and student life?

they have excellent study abroad programs- you can basically pick any country in the world. they also have many different types of programs- you can go thru a general study abroad program, you can go on a SATA program (Study Away Teach Away) where a small group of conn students travel together with a conn professor overseas, you can do a funded summer intership overseas. they also have a great certificate program called CISLA (Center for International Studies and the Liberal Arts): "Students apply and are admitted to CISLA during the sophomore year, and accept the challenge to be CISLA scholars - to reach the required level of oral proficiency in the foreign language, take courses on the origins and dynamics of contemporary society, complete critical skills workshops, and focus on one region of the world and its culture. In conjunction with the challenge, students spend a funded summer internship in the country of his/her focus, and then complete a senior seminar and intergrative project that explores issues related to the major, the international arena, and the foreign language and culture studied."
I personally didnt study abroad but a large proportion of the students do.

Dorms are great- when i was there you were guaranteed a single after your freshman year, i dont think thats true anymore, but the rooms are decent sized. there is a great sense of community in the dorms, and each dorm has its own personality. everyone leaves their doors open to wave at the people walking by, and most people dont bother locking their doors when they leave- the honor code is alive and well.
98% of the students live on campus. the food is better than most college campuses that ive been on.

student life- lots of drinking if youre into that, plenty of options if you arent. new london isnt exactly hopping, so the college does a pretty good job of providing things to do- there is always something going on! students work hard and play hard.

we are taking her back up in two weeks for an interview. Hope this is not going to be a disappointment because we need fin aid so she can not apply ED. But we read that 40% of applicants accepted had applied ED. Will this hurt her chances?

I also read that it can be acliquey school and isolating? true?

while there are cliques, mostly due to sports teams, i think overall the student body is very friendly and welcoming.

How would you explain the social life? What do people do and where do they hang out? Also, do people leave on weekends or do most stay around?

98% of the people stay on campus for the weekend.

I'm not going to lie- drinking is huge- on any given Thursday and Saturday night there are keg parties in at least 3 dorm common rooms, yes, right in the common rooms- if you are over 21, you can take Kegs 101, where you can register to become a "social host" and throw a party in the common rooms. but, there are many people who choose not to drink and love conn too- there are several Substance Free Housing options.

Because New London isnt much of a college town, the college does do a pretty good job of providing students with things to do. Besides keg parties, there are themed dances nearly every weekend, a capella concerts, dance concerts, interesting lectures, tons of clubs, comedy shows, intramural sports, film screenings, open mikes, every friday night they have an acoustic music concert, every thursday night there is a TNE (thursday night event), etc. Plus there are several huge events throughout the year that are unique to Conn, such as "Camelympics"- a weekend Olympics style competition among dorms.
Basically, people rarely complain that there is nothing to do.

How is Connecticut College's reputation academically? How would it compare to other NESCAC schools such as Hamilton or Trinity?

Conn drops its standards totally to bring in male hockey players as well as lax and basketball studs. Trinity will do the same but not the Continentals. They are comfortable being a bottom fisher in football and baseball but pride themselves on top tier status in ice hockey and basketball. Conn is a little better than Skids but not by much. It is a wannabe NESCAC entry and struggling to bring in real males more so than Vassar and other former aal girls schools.

Conn has a much better reputation than its ranking would suggest. I'm applying to an extremely competitive grad program, and most of the professors at these top universities are impressed that i went to conn. It's actually the 25th most competitive LAC in the country based on admission stats.

In regards to comparing to other New England LACs schools, i would group them as the following (based on personal experience and my high school and college classmates acceptance/rejection stats. also, there i did not rank them within the groupings)

Group 1. Williams, Amherst, Swarthmore
2. Wesleyan, Bowdoin, Middlebury, Wellseley, Haverford, Tufts
3. Conn Coll, Trinity, Vassar, Colgate, Bates, Colby, Hamilton
4. Mt Holyoke, Bryn Mawr, Union, Skidmore,

as you can see, there are some differences between my ranking and USNews. I based these on pure acceptance stats/probabilities.

how about biology at conn? is it a big thing?

its one of the most popular majors at conn, and one of the largest departments. i know several biology majors who are at good med schools right now. from what i heard, they have pretty good facilities for a small college, and the science building was completely renovated recently. there are also two interdisciplinary bio majors: BCMB (Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology) and Neuroscience. i also know that opportunities for undergraduate research are plentiful.

hello i'm an international student... am applying to conncoll dis year. juz wondering how is the racial diversity like n whether internationals fit into the social scene? the stats dun seem very optimistic... :(
