you've got questions, i've got answers.

there are lots of internationals on campus, especially from asia, and they fit right in. there is a very active CCASA (connecticut college asian student association), and one of the most popular events of the year is the annual Diwali dinner- the shows are ALWAYS sold out. there is a big emphasis on diversity these days.

thank you, huskem!!!

What do Conn students do after they graduate? Do most go on to graduate or professional schools, or do some just start working? Do Conn students do well in terms of getting into graduate and professional schools?

great question kramer. overall, most people do very well after graduating. even though its not a well known school for the average person, grad schools are very familiar with the high caliber of students. according to my class ('04) on facebook, here is a sampling of what people are doing:

-many people in grad schools (masters and phds) including: columbia, yale, usc, brown, michigan, uconn, harvard, northwestern, cornell, unc, duke, emory, tufts, nyu, indiana, gw, bu.
-many people in med school and law school (conn is very good with getting people into law schools)
-a bunch of people working for big business/finance firms in nyc, boston and dc.
-several people doing research at the ivies
- lots of teachers

conn is well known for several departments by top grad schools, including psychology, economics, bio, government, history.

Is the psychology programn at conn good? Is it efficient in getting students into top grad programs?

nadash- great question! the psych department is one of, if not the best, at conn. its one of the larger departments, so there is a wide range of classes available, and many professors- and none of the profs are weak! there are also tons of opportunities to conduct your own research.
i was a psych major, and when i got my masters (from an ivy school), i was in shock to find out just how well prepared i was from conn, compared to the other students.
conn does a FANTASTIC job with getting people into good psych programs/great jobs- just off the top of my head, there are psych majors currently at: columbia, unc, michigan, gw, emory, ucla, usc. not to mention various law schools. plus, there are people currently doing psych research at: yale, havard, brown, columbia, nyu.
when i was interviewing at clinical psych phd programs (the most competitive phd program to get into, with an average acceptance rate of five percent), all of the profs that i interviewed with asked specifically about several profs at conn.

i am totally confident that the conn psych department is on par with the top schools in the country!

yeah i was pleasantly shocked when i was reading the online course catalogue... printed out the sections for psy, math and econs (my prospective triple majors) and psy took up 10 pages, as opposed to econs' and math' 6 and 5 pages! the number of courses offered is just so amazing... mainly because the department offers one of the few masters programs in the school i guess. but i shd think that those graduate courses should be available to undergrad students as well?

^^^^ yup- the grad courses are available for upperclassmen to take.

Hmmm, thanks for the answer! ^^

I'm an international needing financial aid. And a lot of it. Any information on that? How are the admission statistics for getting into Conn? Is it difficult for intnls?

Nadash- conn LOVES international students. I honestly have no clue about financial aid for internationals. I received A TON of aid, so they can be quite generous.

As for admission stats- in general, conn accepts about 32% of applicants, average gpa is around 3.8, average SAT is 1390, average SAT-2s are between 680-750. this year they said they accepted only 40% of the valedictorians that applied, so it is much more competitive than the USNews rank would suggest. for more about the stats, you can check admissionblog.conncoll.edu which is written by an admissions counselor and updated nearly everyday.

hey i am an intl...wait listed at conn due to fin aid thingy
have sent loads of supportin material and know ov some fin aid spaces bein vacant!!..
anythin abt my chances to get in?

kimi- i dont know how that works, but you should check out admissionblog.conncoll.edu

ok thank you

What is the economics dept. like?

Alan- econ is definitely one of the most popular majors, and one of the strongest departments. i never took an econ class, but i know there are some very popular and fantastic profs. also, there are many many many econ majors that have incredible jobs as well as tons of people in great law schools. sorry i cant be of more assistance! i recommend you look at the department webpage and look at the classes that are offered, which may give you a better sense of the department.

no message

Would you say the school is preppy?

thats a tough one, neonlux. i think that at first glance, the school is preppy, because most people dress nicely/clean cut. however, conn is much less preppy than many similar schools (i.e. trinity, colgate, bowdoin, bucknell, williams, are much preppier). the significant majority of students definitely do not pop their collars. while students may look preppy, politically the student body is quite liberal. also, there are significant numbers of people who dont look like they just stepped out of a j crew catalogue, and i think that students truly mix with everyone from every type of stereotype imaginable.

can you explain the co-ed bathroom situation? is it weird? do the floors sometimes split into one male and female bathroom on the same floor? i mean im a girl who does not want to have to use the same toilet that a guy just puked in the night before or showering while a guy is using the toilet. i know there are single sex floors but i was just was wondering about this bathroom deal.

lmd:
i too was very hesitant about the coed bathrooms at first- im pretty modest and despise listening to people go to the bathroom. however, once i got there i barely even noticed it. i rarely saw anyone in the bathroom because everyone is on different schedules. Many floors have several bathrooms so you have options if someone is in there or it smells a little funky.
the showers are in locked stalls with a shower curtain, so its very private, and people bring their bathrobes with them to walk back to their rooms.
i actually lived on an all girls floor my freshman year, in a coed dorm, and it was really nice. but the cleanliness of the bathroom was only mildly better than the coed bathrooms- the cleaning staff is very good! the only gross bathrooms are in the two old unrenovated dorms, but i think they are working on that over the summer.

basically, people are pretty respectful of eachother, having a lot to do with the honor code, and i never felt uncomfortable with the situation! plus, its always interesting when parents/grandparents come to visit and are totally confused!
