you've got questions, i've got answers.

I've read about budgetary problems at ConnColl with some layoffs of professors and perhaps not the most up to date facilities in some areas. Can you comment on that?

hmm i'm not too certain on any major budget problems lately, and i cant think of any profs that have been laid off.
i do know that they are currently in the process of a huge renovation project, updating some dorms and classrooms. this past summer, they completely renovated the two shabby dorms on campus. all of the science facilities have been updated within the past 10 years (and from what i've heard, they are excellent facilities). i'm not really familiar with what is happening next.

oh wait, just thought of possible budget related academic issue- i think there was talk of decreasing the film studies department, but i think after some angry petitioning, it was resolved.

sorry i cant be any more specific!

I agree it is underrated; but she wanted to apply ever since the admissions rep visited her school. In the end it is the best of the best. Alls well that ends well!

with the gpa of 3.7 or 3.8 (don't remember what it really is but i think it's around there), is that a weighted gpa or an unweighted one?

i have an unweighted gpa of 3.5 but a weighted of 4.2--how does this measure up?

nobody has posted on this thread in a while, so i'm not sure if you're still checking this to answer questions:

When I visited Connecticut College, I asked about the college's relationship with New London. I got a kind of awkward response, and my tour guide told me that nobody really went to New London because of the sense of community on the campus alone. Is this true? Does Connecticut College participate in a lot of community service projects within New London?

No!! The vast majority of students are involved in community service!

I really think ConnColl is my son's first choice although he did not apply EDI or ED 2. I think given the choice of applying ED and getting in or keeping it RD and not getting in, he'd choose the ED. Are the chances for admission much greater with the Early Decision? He's about 3.5 GPA, ACT 30 (did not submit SATs) and athlete (captain for three season running ). I guess it could go either way but I know he really would like to go there. Chances??

the admission rate is much higher for ED.
HOWEVER, the fact that he is male will be very helpful. Good ACT score, will he run at Conn?

Yes, he will definitely run as ConnColl and has met with the coach.

hi, i am an international student considering applying to CC this year. The school requires me to take the TOEFL even though my language of instruction in high school has been English. I'm planning to take it in the middle of January. Would it be alrite to take it at that time or it would be too late? It is the earliest session that has available seats. Thanks in advance;)

tbhnams- i'm not sure about their policy. definitely call/email the admissions office and ask.

tbhnams, you're from Singapore, right?

anyway, you can email one of the admission officers to explain your situation and request for a waiver. i did that and the admission officer understands that it makes no sense to have someone who studied in english-medium schools his entire life take the crappy TOEFL. it's a criminal waste of money anyway. u shdn't have problem getting the requirement waived provided your verbal (or writing) scores are decent.

So are you a J2 or NSF now?

maiby, is your son still thinking that CC is his top choice? I don't have any idea how many spots they "save" for the ED II round, but looking at your son's stats I suspect that he'd have a very good chance. (I think it's fairly easy to convert an RD application to ED II at most schools, before the deadline obviously.) Once CC became my son's clear favorite, he recognized (on his own) the value in applying ED. At the info session we attended, the guy talked about the fact that during ED they are looking for reasons to accept you, but during RD they are trying to weed people out to make the pile smaller. That seemed to resonate with him! (That was the only college info session we attended where it was expressed so clearly that ED allows the admissions officers to look at each applicant very carefully.) DS thought that he had enough attributes that they might think he would be a good fit, so he went for it. He's very psyched that it worked out!

NEMom of 3: Was your son interested in any other colleges and what made him decide to apply ED to CC? (What are his interests?) Congratulations to him (and to you)... a nice feeling to know where you're going and all is done!

Thanks, maiby! He was focusing on similar-sized LACs, and after we'd done all of our tours, CC was the school that appealed to him the most--although there were a couple of others that would have been fine matches (and he realized that). But he really studied the paper catalogues that I picked up in every admissions office, and in the end CC had just the right combination of appealing academic courses (he's probably going to major in government), music opportunities (both in terms of performance groups and courses for a possible minor) and lacrosse (but if he plays in college it'll probably be at the club level, but you never know). He had also heard that the food at Conn is pretty good, and he'll be able to get home easily if he needs or wants to on occasion--that kind of nailed things for him!

I ~am~ very happy to be done. He's our youngest so I've become a bit of a pro at this stuff over the years, but I still found myself sweating this out a bit (more than I expected) and then heaving a huge sigh of relief! He hadn't finished all of his RD supplements yet so there was going to be a forced-march through those after Christmas, had things not worked out as they did. I'm glad I won't have to be cracking that whip. :)

Thanks NE Mom: My son is still working on those supplements. Went through this three years ago with son #1. Never checked out CC with him, though. Son #2 spent the most time at CC (3 visits) and therefore I think he has a certain level of familiarity there.. and he thought the people he met there were very nice. I hope good news comes from CC in the spring!

To Huskem55: I applied ED to Conncoll, but I wonder if my less-than-perfect stats can lead to deferral? Is there any chance I'm accepted?
Could you give me some advice about this:
Profile Asian Male
GPA : 8.5 / 10, 5% class
TOEFL : 607 PBT
SAT Low Gonna have to retake this in JAN ( But I asked the college to disregard it)
SAT II: 750 Math 740 French 630 Physics
ECs:
Have a published work in sociology
Several city contest for gifted students prizes
Tutor for poor children.
Varsity sports: Football and Basketball
Pass the French Baccaleaureat Program, nice marks
Speak 3 languages fluently

Dad and Mom: PhDs
Essays : The best stuff I've ever written
Recommendations: Great!
Question: What are my chances?
Intended Major: Sociology

Any advice are welcome. Thank you

hey bronbron, pardon me for hijacking this thread but i thought i'll give my two cents' worth since huskem hasn't replied yet.

i guess you applied ED2, since ED1 results are most probably out by now? and i see that you haven't taken TOEFL and your GPA seems quite atypical for american high schools - may i assume you're an international student?

Your stats seem well within the range of that of the accepted students actually. So don't worry there. Conn places quite a huge emphasis on essays, so it's great that you feel they are the best stuff you've written. Conn is also trying very hard to improve its diversity these days (on top of balancing that gender ratio which is tilting 'in favor' of the females again), so the fact that you're an asian male probably makes you an even more attractive candidate. Not to mention you're applying ED - they'll probably cut you some slack there (as at every other college, much as they'll like to deny it).

The crucial question is perhaps whether you're a US citizen or an international student. If you are a US citizen, or an international not seeking aid, I think your chances are good. But if you're an international student seeking financial aid, it may be tougher.

i think you have a great chance

Hey Woebegone, your words worth like $200, not 2 cents at all.
I actually gave my Why Conncoll for a ConnColl student to proofread, and he says it's great :). But actually I am an international who is seeking aid, it might be tough, you're right, woebegone.
And thanks to huskem55 for kindly PM me and encourage me with my application. You guys are so friendly. Good luck to all of you.
P/S: In the worst case, if I got deferred in Conn, what do you think of my chances in optional SAT LACs like Bates, Bowdoin, Middlebury or Colby?
