well i cant be sure, but all this talk about UVA's horrible on grounds food is getting me a little nervous. it recently got a D+ food its dining according to BusinessWeek's UVA profile..Ive also heard from several that its bad just wanted to hear how you guys feel or some imput on dining from current UVA students

I'm currently a first year at the university and I can confirm that the dining hall food is as bad as you've heard...sorry. I mean, maybe the first two months it will seem eatable, but it will get old very fast. But on the bright side, there are many restaurants (that deliver) in the area, including on the corner, that have VERY good food.

Are there no fast food restaurants on grounds?

The food isn't that bad. It's not that great, either. It's the same Aramark stuff that many universities have, so I don't think the grass is greener in this respect at too many other schools...

On the corner there are many restaurants/fast food; if by "fast food restaurants" you mean McDonalds, Burger King, Wendys, then no.
But these are the restaurants on the corner alone:

Amigo's
Arch's
Baja Bean Co.
Biltmore Grill
Buddhist Biker Bar & Grill
Cafe Europa
Chesapeake Bagel Bakery
The College Inn
Coupe DeVille's
The Crab
Espresso Royale Caffe
Frank's
Gumby's
Little Hunan
Littlejohn's New York Delicatessan
Martha's Cafe
Mellow Mushroom
Michael's Bistro & Tap House
O'Neill's Pub
Orbit Billiards & Cafe
The Pita Pit
Sakura
St. Maarten Cafe
Starbuck's
Sylvia's Pizza
Take It Away
The Virginian
The White Spot

"It's the same Aramark stuff that many universities have, so I don't think the grass is greener in this respect at too many other schools"

Well do keep in mind a D+ is based off a bell curve, I mean a certain quota gets A's B's so on and so forth so i guess this grade is based on a comparitive basis with other schools, honestly this may be the only fault with UVA, I'll just have to brown-bag it lol

yeawhoayea, that's from some random ranking from a magazine. Please don't tell me you take their opinion as being all-knowing and authoritative. There simply is no way to establish which schools have food that is definitely better than others. Seriously, the food here isn't great, but it isn't the worst, either. I've sampled food at a number of schools, and UVA's food is pretty typical. It's not as good as what I had at the Naval Academy or Rice, but it's not as bad as what I had at Georgetown. I'm a very, very picky eater, and while I can't say I've liked all the food I've had here, I haven't exactly starved. You'll live.

Crappy food means you'll keep off the freshman 15! Just trying to look on the bright side... :)

Don't forget about Panera! Panera Bread Co. is probably the best "fast food" place on Earth.

lol you got that right semiserious...I definitely lost weight this year.

If you want something fast the food in Newcomb ain't that bad. They have some killer specialty salads. I always find something to eat. If all else fails a plate of fries and a salad does the trick.

The food is pretty good on the corner, and the BODOs finally opened!

I don't understand how people like the salad because they have the same variety each and every day. Newcomb has some really awful food, and they have the same variety every week and it doesn't change at all.

Yeah, you do have some nice choices at the corner i guess, but you can't always go there to eat because it's expensive!

I used to think that too, but dude...look at how much your meal plan costs per meal. Pretty expensive!

while UVA is in close proximity to several great "fast food" places-if you live on campus I believe you are required to purchase a meal plan, so I probably wont dine out my 4 yrs because I dont want to waste my meal plan away. So I guess I'll be dining at Newcomb Hall.

I'm trying to pick a freshmen mealplan ... What can Plus$ be used for?

Food from non-dining hall establishments of the dining system. I.e. sushi, pizza, sandwiches, smoothies, burgers, etc. Almost always better quality than in the dining hall.

i've heard the food is pretty bad and you get tired of it, but consider too that all the people i know at JMU (which is a lot), a school that is pretty much known for its good food, say that yeah the food is good but you get tired of it. i think no matter where you go this food thing will pop up...

I disagree. I've found the specialty salads to be quite good in Pav XI. I can't always eat'em cause I have an alergy to bell peppers. So, when they load up on the bells, I hit the salad bar or find something else.

Nobody claims it's gourmet, but it sure ain't bad for buffet style food.

One can do quite well by eating once a week on the corner. Get together for a pie at the Mellow Mushroom. Take it Away has some good inexpensive food. Mix it up a little and you'll find happiness.
