I'm looking to apply to William & Mary early decision and would like to know my chances.

I live in the area, first of all, and my older sister will be graduating from W&M this year. Not sure that'll make much of a difference or now, but still.

Anyway, I have a 3.98 as a senior, taking two AP classes this semester, one next semester. I'm in the top 10% of my class. I have good extracurriculars, including a Varsity sport for four years, membership of a few honor societies (Spanish, NHS, Math, and hopefully Art), and membership of a number of other clubs. I hold leadership positions in two honor societies and one club. I can get good recommendations too.

My SATs weren't particularly strong so I took them again yesterday. I feel really good about how I did, but my old score stands as such: 580 CR, 540 M, 580 W.

Also, what are my chances for getting into my alternates...Mary Washington, James Madison, VCU, Virginia Tech, UVA, George Mason, Christopher Newport.

You are an easy in to all of the schools you listed. As for William and Mary, you have a very strong chance. You say that you have a 3.98 in your senior year. Is that the total GPA that you will be applying with? How about the strength of your curriculum? How many total AP's? Did you take AP Caluculus? How many years of a foreign language? Your SAT's definitely need to come up. How about the ACT?

You need to contact admissions about your interest. You need to stay in contact with them. I believe that your sister being a successful student is going to help you. I wish you the best of luck and would not be surprised to see you admitted. Do the optional essay. Do everything you can.

Several of the Virginia colleges have gotten harder to get into in recent years. Your current SAT scores are in the bottom 25% for both UVa and William and Mary. If your SAT goes up significantly, your chances are good because your GPA is very good. I think your overall list is good, and you will likely get into several of those schools even if your SAT doesn't improve.

I'd say you are fine to all your alternatives except for maybe UVa, as it is very competitive there too. UMW, JMU, VT, CNU, GMU, should all be sure shots for you, with some scholarships as well. William & Mary will of course be a little more difficult to get into, make sure to meet with your admissions officer for your area if he or she comes to your high school and make a good impression. If your SAT scores were indeed brought up, I'm sure your chances are even higher. Good luck!
