Hey guys! Long time visitor, first time poster. I just submitted my UMich app. Here's my info: I'm OOS (from NYC) and attend one of the best high schools in the city, probably the state. My school doesn't rank. My regular UW GPA is 3.6 and my UMich GPA is 3.5. SAT score is 1330/1600 or 1920/2400 (Math: 690 Reading: 640 Writing: 590). By the end of high school I would've taken 4 AP's. I took two last year (4 in World and 2 in Spanish) =( . Last year, UMich took 46/64 applicants from my school and 16 enrolled. In 2004 42/86 were accepted and in '03 they took 56/79. I have decent EC's, nothing mind-blowing: several clubs, college courses, summer job and city council project among other things. I'm multiracial (Asian and White) and female. I'm also applying to the school of Kinesiology to major in Sports Management, and I'm wondering if being a girl will help my chances? From my estimation my rec was pretty strong and friends and a teacher have told me my essays were good to excellent. Did I send my app too late? And is it true that UMich is downsizing its freshman class this year?

Thanks!

SPORT MANAGEMENT!

I love you already.

I bet you're looking into NYU's SM program. Anyways, I think you are a borderline applicant. I got deferred with a similar GPA and test scores, and i'm in-state. Same major, same college.

However, not many females are looking into Sport Management. That will help you a lot.

You did indeed submit your application late. And your OOS competition is hard, they are mainly applying here as a safety, whereas you are a good match/reach applicant. They are closing one of the dorms (Mosher Jordan) meaning they can't go overcapacity.

Being a woman will help you, and I think that you could be admitted based on that, as well as a being strong applicant. You are applying to a "male jock" major.

I am impressed. I am also a girl looking into the sports field, not sports management though. I want to be a sports attorney so I applied to LSA. You are so lucky to live in New York, so many opportunities for internships during the summer. This summer I will either have to drive to Philly or NYC, I live in New Jersey, exactly in the middle of the two. I love sports and it is good to know that I am not the only girl who is.

Hey knows. Good to meet another female sports buff! I was also pondering a future in law but I'm not the fastest thinker on my feet. It's interesting that on Kinesiology's site, the three alums they featured who majored in Sports Management were female, although they prob are the exception rather than the rule. http://www.kines.umich.edu/prospective/ugrad/hearalums.html
Interesting that you mention internships. I applied to one through a contest with the Mets and will find out in Feb if I am a finalist. Is yours law-related or sports-related? Are there good opportunities in the sports field via internship for high schoolers like us? Because I would jump at the opportunity!

Good luck with your apps!

are you a mets fan? cuz that would make you pretty much the coolest...

Let's go Mets, baby!

QNYergrl -
Well, I am currently talking to about ten different organizations for a possible summer internship. Some are law-related others are sports-related and some are both, that is ideal. If you don't get the Mets internship I would strongly consider talking to minor league baseball teams. I have currently talked to the two minor league baseball teams in NJ, Trenton and Somerset. If you really want an internship in sports management, I would also talk to the MLS team in your area, the New York Liberty, and any other smaller leagues because you are much more likely to be given the internship at a lesser level.

knows11 - thanks for that last post. Any info you have about SM related activities let us know. I needed to think about internships, although I didn't think about it until I got into college. I'm going to talk to some local lower-level teams, as I don't think the major teams would allow an internship by a high school graduate who has yet to go to college.

Yup, grtheman, I'm about as fanatical a Mets fan as they come =)

Thanks so much for the info knows. If I end up at Binghamton U, i'll try to get a gig with the Mets Double-A team.

In light of minor league teams, each baseball franchise has about 6 minor league affiliates, so there are many teams across the country that may have internship opportunities. A list of teams and their locations can be found at the best minor league baseball site, in my opinion, http://www.baseballamerica.com. Just navigate the drop-down menus to the lower left, "Teams" and "Leagues." Hockey also has minor league affiliates although they have less than baseball.

Baseball America does fantastic work. Any of you have their minor league guides that they publish? Amazing information.
