-equestrian for 8 consecutive years, 9.5 years total; I compete individually and on a team

-I ride western as well as English, and so have been training in double disciplines for the past 3.5 years. I have done exceptionally well in both

-I started a project horse in the fall (2013) that had zero hunt seat experience, and put in approximately 2.5 hours each day after school to train her, more on the weekends. I was able to balance a demanding junior year schedule while training a mare that I then successfully showed come spring and summer, and did very well.

-I had 6 months of natural horsemanship training in 9th grade, which allowed me insight to equine psychology and behavior

-on an Interscholastic Equestrian Association team. Ranked 1st and individual champion for my region, 2nd in my zone, and 8th in the USA for my division during 2013-2014. I have been on team for two going on three years, and it is about 4.5 hours a week with the team from August through May, with 12-hour show days 5-9 times a year

-got internship this summer with genetic counselor at hospital (approx. 84 hrs total); position usually held by college students. (spent extra hours doing various tasks for medical office, filing etc, so I guess that counts as volunteer work? Also shadowed a surgical oncologist for a day)

-for fun, I also raise Light Brahma layer hens, and experiment with botany a bit, growing and grafting cacti and such

-self-employed pet-sitter and self-employed horse braider (home/local shows and have spent a few weeks at HITS)

-published photographer; pictures featured in local publications and I provide pictures for the school year book

-I am an AP Biology tutor as well

Volunteer Work

-approx. 608 hours as CIT at horse camp, I was the “head CIT” and so often taught anatomy and horsemanship lessons, supervised groups of 10-20 kids, and made morning plans for the other CITs (volunteer) (9.5 hours a day, 4 days a week, 8 weeks/year for 2 years)

-about 100 hours of random barn work, from painting jumps to breaking ice and watering the horses in ten degree weather (volunteer)

-volunteered time giving pony rides at birthday parties and festivals, approx. 40 hours

-I do volunteer marketing for the local SPCA

-volunteered for the local nature museum assisting with maple sugaring tours, as well as their annual Earth Day festivals (19 hrs.)

-I volunteered with the local acupuncture office (16 hrs.)

-I volunteered time with therapeutic riding lessons for 2.5 years, a total of about 10 hours a week, 44 weeks out of the year (1,100). Worked with certified hippotherapist. Co-produced first therapeutic riding division in the Fall 2011 SSS Home Show. Only stopped helping because we had to switch barns and the woman running it moved to California. Currently looking into another farm that offers it.

-various activities for NHS…blood drive, assisting graduation, orientations, etc. Very active member as far as planning and advertising events goes as well.

-roughly 1,893 hours total.

GPA, test scores...

-my unweighted GPA is a 94 (3.9), my weighted GPA is a 97 (don't know 5.0 scale)

-ACT: 31

-I am in the top 7% of my class.

-wish to go into the sciences

-NYS resident

SUNY Geneseo
SUNY Binghamton
SUNY Stony Brook
SUNY New Paltz
Cornell College of Agricultural and Life Sciences

I think your a match for these schools – I am not familiar with the other schools on your list so i cant chance you on those.

I think you can easily get into all except possibly Colgate and Cornell, but those certainly are not out of the question. They’re just not “slam dunks.”

@lauriejgs‌ @thegrant‌ thank you for your opinions!!
