Yup, yet another hopeful Ivy.

Hi. You know what to do better than I do, so I'll spill it all.

Hmm..that was a rather measley list. Saddening.

Work: cleaning those wonderful test tubes in a lab. good pay though, heh.

As far as Recs, I'll probably have some pretty darn good ones from my school teachers and an amazing one from my flute teacher.

Essay-wise. Hm, well, apparantly I have a good voice in my writing, so hopefully my personality will shine (or crumble) through :) Umm. I'm planning on using one of my TASP essays for the CA - got to the interview round and dropped the ball there, so, eh, it's good enough to get through TASP prelims, right?? No? Oh, okay..

Oh, and I nearly forgot the list of the colleges. So here goes:
Yale University (sniff, can dreams actually come true??)
Stanford University
Brown University
Princeton University
Harvard University
Cornell University
Duke University
University of Michigan – Ann Arbor
Northwestern University
Carnegie Mellon University
Washington University in St. Louis
University of California - Berkeley

Your EC’s seem way to boring…they make you sound too asain…spice them up with something out of the box that isn’t related to math and science.

Otherwise colleges might overlook you as just another typical applicant.

But obviously your stats are great…based on what i’ve seen you will get into a handful of colleges but it’s really a crap shoot depending on what they see in you.

oh..forgot the whole volunteeration deal. Um, well. I do a decent amount (esp. since I have to organize a bunch of them for Student Senate). But by no means do I have 2000 hours under my belt. Sorry. ;D

AHH! I know!! But sadly our highschool offers little and I seem too Asian even for myself. I personally blame my asian elementary years ; )

I think I’m more of a angularly well-rounded person..you know, math and science but music and a bit of sports too. I tried really hard to improve with flute, and my dedication paid off, so hopefully that will show something?

Ah, who am I kidding, I am THE typical Asian girl applicant stamp. : )

Sounds like a top tier candidate to me. I’m not saying you’ll get in Yale for sure but you are the type of person that SHOULD be applying and will be considered. They’re expanding, hopefully admitting more people. Good luck.

You posted this why?

Because it seems like all I have are good test scores and standard ECs, and I just feel that it’s not be good enough for the most selective schools (intense glare to those schools, heh)…So many people just look at the test scores and go “yup, you’re in - why are you worrying.” But that’s clearly not the case 'cause sooo many of these perfect 2400 kids get rejected..so I just wanted to know from other people who probably have more experience with this than I do : )

..and why not?

It’s just my opinion, but seems very gloaty. If I were on a college board of admissions, I would look down on that. That’s why a lot of students with scores like that get rejected.

Good thing I’m not for most of the students on this website.

Yeah, no I TOTALLY get your point. When I first found CC, I was like “wow,..look at those idiots parading around trying to fit their whole lives into a single thread. Ha. HA.”

But then as a rising senior with Asian parents (you need to try them sometime - they really are something hahah), I’ve become much more insecure and blahblah especially with a lot of unpredicted rejections from our school…Eh. I know, I despise myself for doing this too, but what can I say - I’m a weakling.

You are certainly someone who has all you need for the top school. I would be shocked if you did not get into a goodly number of your choices. I suggest you apply early for Michigan which has rolling admissions. You will then have your safety school which is a very fine one, and you can then cut the number of your apps down to just the ones you prefer to Mich. The rest is all gravy. Congrats on such stellar stats. If you need or want financial/merit money, you need to look for financial safeties and merit opportunities as well. But if you are full pay, you should be fine.

Yale University (sniff, can dreams actually come true??)-reach
Stanford University-reach
Brown University-reach
Princeton University-reach
Harvard University-reach
Cornell University-safety/match (I doubt you will get rejected, but the admissions process at any ivy is random)
Duke University-safety
University of Michigan – Ann Arbor-safety
Northwestern University
Carnegie Mellon University-safety
Washington University in St. Louis-safety/match
University of California - Berkeley-match
My inclination is you will definitely get into one of those elite ivies (prob. more, your stats are amazing)

u have way too many safties

Write good essays. Your ECs don’t have a strong overarching theme but you’re such a strong candidate overall that I’d be surprised if you didn’t get into a few Ivies.

Also, I wouldn’t Duke, U Mich, Northwestern and CMU safeties for anyone. You need to find some real safeties.

Whoa..I never thought of Duke and Mich as safeties..maybe matches..Hmm, interesting. But hey, that’s cool. Incidently, do any of you know about the weird interdisciplinary programs at CMU? The one I’m interested in is called BHA (Bachelor of Humanities and Arts)..it seems pretty cool, but as we all know, pretty cool means pretty hard. Any information is appreciated. :)

Mihan, you could use Mich as a safety if you apply very early. I’m pretty sure you would get in. I would hesitate to call it a safety for anyone in general because there are programs that have limited space that would not take Einstein if the spots are filled. By applying early in the season, you can make it your safety. If you don’t get in there, that is one big red flag to investigate, but I truly doubt that would happen.

Though I think you will get into Duke and most of your other schools, I just would not call them safeties. In schools with those accept numbers, you just don’t know. I was shocked when a good friend of ours’ son did not get into Duke. Like you, stellar stats, plus had gone to a summer program there for a couple of years. Was deferred early, and then denied. He did get into all of his other school, but Duke, for some reason did not take him. Never could figure that one out.

The BHA program at CMU is pretty cool and pretty hard. But those kids who do it are truly interested in it, in my opinion. I know some kids who did do it. It was their passion so I don’t think they though of it in terms of difficulty, but as something they so wanted to do.

Oh, no worries about real safeties - I shall be applying to the University of Iowa as my ultimate safety. Et merci beaucoup for all the suggestions and insights : )

just curious…how did you end up in iowa? you’re an asian, right? i thought most of them live near the coasts

Hahah, oh I was born here. My dad was doing his PhD at the U of I. We moved around a bit when I was young 'cause of my dad’s job (Texas, Wisconsin, West Virginia) but I moved back to Korea when he got a job there. That was in 1st grade. During elementary school I came and went to Wisonsin (where my aunt lived) and to England (where my aunt moved, hahah) and then I ended up back here in 7th grade. : )

I know, fascinating. hahah, but Iowa really isn’t that bad - and this is coming from the girl who spent half her childhood in the biggest city in Korea. ; )

no more takers? oiii.

lol hello fellow korean.
Hmm so you did not take the SAT II’s in Korean with listening? how come
AIME and USABO.. very similar to my stats.. lol
I think we all need to escape from the asianness and do something out of the box.. sigh..
