Yup, yet another hopeful Ivy.

Your EC’s are your weakness.. These are just standard asian EC’s, and i can’t see who you really are. However, you do have some decent accomplishments and that’s much better than nothing… and a little better than average. B/c Yale, Harard, Princeton, Stanford have an emphasis on character/ EC/Essays/Personality, they’re reaches.

The rest, you should be in good shape for.

Hahah - try that with MY parents.. I tried to get involved in our new Philosophy Club and STAND and etc, but I got the “NO” stamp from the parentals. At first I attempted to sneak around and make up excuses to stay after school so I could go to the meetings, but eventually they caught on and I was placed under strict parental EC surveillance.

Asian parents = a pain. a BIG pain (especially when you yourself are a relatively “atypical” asian or twinkified asian)

You mean, “another Ivy hopeful”.

:P

Sorries, I could not resist.

Anyway, I don’t know how to chance you, so.. please add at least 1 more safety?

And yeah I think you’re the type who conveys her “voice” well in essays.

No, no, I think you misunderstood. I AM a hopeful ivy. Inching my way up to the sunlight. Don’t know if I’ll make it though. ; ) Hahah, yeah. Thanks for the correction. I was confused initially and then the understanding sorta hit me in the back of my head and said “idiot.”

My “new” list is this:

  1. Yale University
  2. Brown University
  3. Stanford University
  4. Princeton University
  5. Harvard University
  6. Duke University
  7. Rice University
  8. Northwestern University
  9. University of Michigan – Ann Arbor
  10. Oberlin College
  11. University of California – Berkeley
  12. University of Iowa
    …is that a little better? I mean, I KNOW I’ll get into U Iowa

Question: do you actually want to go to U Iowa? I mean, would you be happy there? I forgot to add that while you really only need just 1 safety, it has to be a safety that you can definitely get into, definitely afford, and definitely would be quite happy attending.

And I just saw Oberlin on your list – I think I’m a little confused now. I mean if you only had, say, Yale, Brown and Rice I’d totally get it, but.. Stanford? Duke?

What kind of college would you like to go to, actually? I understand that different aspects of different schools might be appealing to any applicant (like, I applied to Wesleyan which is liberal as haaale, but I also applied to Washington & Lee, a notably conservative school, because of its strength in academic departments I was interested in.. plus the students seem to be really friendly). It’s just that your list seems a bit too focused on prestige (beg your pardon if I’m wrong)?

I think I could probably get one of the presidential scholarships at Iowa, in which case the cost would dwindle down to close to zero when compiled with other “if you go to UI” local scholarships, so I think I can be happy at U Iowa. Parentals wouldn’t be, but me and my wallet would.

I chose most of the “non-ivy” schools because in addition to great academics, they had excellent/thriving music programs and specifically flute faculty. I doubt that I will take the BA/BM route since convincing the parents has been a bit of a challenge, but I would still like to take lessons and participate in music activities…That combined with looking at campus locale and etc produced that list.

And now my turn to be confused - aren’t Oberlin, Brown, Yale, Rice relatively liberal schools? And isn’t Stanford…also a relatively (heh) liberal school? I don’t really know about Duke’s liberality, so I can’t comment on that..So I don’t think I get your point..could you explain?

after happily munching on a snack just realized that I sounded like an arrogant prick when I said I could probably get one of the scholarships. I was just speaking from what I’ve seen among my peers…Oii. And without that still, in-state tuition < other. So…yeah. Oops.

SAT II bio grade is terrible. There’s no hope. Give up now.

I know…I self-grounded myself for 2 weeks for that. Shame on me. HAHAH, just kidding. My mom was all worried and considered retaking and all that nonsense while I happily said “WOOT! OVER 750! YEAH, BABY.” She got a little mad. Oh well. :)

i rec that you take out oberlin from your list. After that you have a reasonable list!
Good Luck ;)

How so? I just liked Oberlin because of its connection to the conservatory, but was there something I didn’t know?

ROFL cornell a safety? Duke a safety? Berkeley a match when she’s out of state?

Sorry, I might be wrong, but clearly not what I know…

I sorta agree too..I think (dare I?) that Duke, Cornell and Berkeley are match/low reaches for me. But anyways, I’ve decided that Berkeley isn’t really for me (I know, I know, I’m just really really fickle about thest things..heheh).

Invoyable, what’s your opinion?

wow so many krns. honestly, your EC’s and awards are just not impressive enough for the higher ivies. your grades are a plus, but even high SAT scores dont mean as much anymore. Aside from Yale, though, you should do fine.

Well, if I have a decent personality (more amiable than sone) and happen to have a great interview + work hard to make my essays unique and show ME as a person, do you think the adcom will look past a little of that?

I know it’s a really lame excuse, but coming from Iowa, there really isn’t THAT much opportinities (atleast compared to New Englanders and such, heh)

If you don’t get into any of the Ivies, I would be pretty shocked. You should get into at least one of them.
