well, after being rejected from UCLA a few days ago i realized that i had my hopes waaay too high for schools that were big reaches for me

these are a rough outline of my stats:

-OOS student
-2160 SAT, 32 ACT
-UC unweighted GPA: ~3.6, weighted: ~3.8
-extracurriculars: varsity wrestling, participated in a few clubs, like 80 hours of volunteering
-AP scholar award
-financial: single parent, makes ~140k a year
-my class rank is top 10% (barely, like 55/570), but there was nowhere to put that on the application and i am out of state, so the admissions people probably would not know

would i have any chance at all at berkeley, i am pretty sure my GPA is just way too low to get in

Actually, you never know. While your scores are good and ECs are average, your GPA is somewhat low.

People have this conception that Berkeley is harder to get into than UCLA. The numbers are actually very similar and there are several people who are admitted to Berkeley but not UCLA, and vice-versa.

No - they accept a greater number of people than there are spaces in a class with the expectation that a number of students will turn down the offer admission. Factor in the kids they take off the waitlist, and the real “acceptance rate” is much higher than 8 percent. For most of these schools, it’s better to compare the acceptance rate v. the enrollment rate than to look at either in a vacuum. For example, Berkeley’s acceptance rate is 23%, and its enrollment rate is 41% (41% of accepted students accept the offer of admission). On the other hand, though UCLA’s acceptance rate is also 23%, its enrollment rate is only 37% – fewer people who are accepted to UCLA choose to go there.

You never know. A kid from my school got in with a 3.5. Just make your essay really solid. It would be insanely lucky to get in but you might as well try.

Man, dont let UCLA take you down. After I saw my Wash St Louis application waitlisted I was like sad. but few hours later I got to UCLA. Trust me, it isnt always the ACT and SAT.
I had a 33 ACT, 4.0 GPA, but 400+ hours of volunteering. No ap. also OOS. Not 10%. Our stats are somewhat similar, I bet you will get in to Berkeley. My brother had 2090 in his SAT and got in, you can def do that :)

I came in with a 3.0 unweighted, 4.0 weighted. AP Scholar, 2000 SAT and mid-range for my school. So I guess I was in a very similar place.

Right now, I am a double major in economics and biology/chemistry with workstudy and trying to get research. Most of my classes are stressful, but doable. So don’t worry too much about it. So, all in all, HS grades means nothing and the college reps know it.

Just cross your finger, it’s not impossible. And honestly, where ever you go…you will have both good and crappy professors. Heck, you will prob face less competition and more research and other opportunities.

UC’s are a crapshoot. about 7 people got into UCLA at my school and only 1 of them actually got 2000+. I got rejected, however my scores were not that great. I am hoping that I might have a chance at Berkeley, but I think you still have a chance too. Your GPA isnt TOO low.
