Based on your previous experience, what events and/or activities would you recommend? There is a lot of stuff going on and some people unfortunately just won't have enough time to attend all of them.

Bruin Bash, Activities Fair, and the meeting for your department major are the things I recommend. I would not recommend Volunteer Day, slither yourself out of that one.

At the very least, you should check out Bruin Bash (Sunday). The bands are alright this year…but what makes the event great is that a huge portion of the UCLA student body attends, building school unity/fun/etc. I also recommend getting wrist bands in the morning so you can stand on the floor: it makes it a lot more fun than sitting in the bleachers. Oh and if you’re not shy, there’s a dance after that people go to before heading off to parties.

good info! @sid, any specific reason to avoid volunteer day?

No particular reason. If you really want to go you can and you will enjoy it. Im all for volunteering but doing it for just one day is a waste of time. UCLA gets all the press and credit but individually there isn’t much recognition for the students. It’s like a pimp and ho situation.

Where do you get wristbands for Bruin Bash?

In previous years it was in the morning (Sunday) in front of Pauley…it’ll probably be near the bear. Your RA’s should definitely know.

Oh I forgot to add, if you are a fan of movies, there’s a free sneak for the movie “Buried” by CEC. Warning though, it happens during Bruin Bash and you have to leave EARLY to get in line as they have very limited spots (like during the first half of the concert, which sucks). IMO you should just attend Bruin Bash as you’re at least guaranteed to get in. One of my good friends is in CEC and they have free screenings all year anyway…like I watched Shutter Island a month before release, or they even have had Toy Story 3(3/4 of it), Eagle Eye, adult pirate movie, etc.

Wristbands (for concert + dance) will be distributed from 10am - 2pm on Sunday at Hedrick Court, Sunset Village, De Neve Plaza, Rieber Court, and Bruin Bear. You will need a wristband for the concert this year.

And hmm… no. The movie does not happen during Bruin Bash nor do you have to leave during the during the first half. X_X; The movie’s at 11pm, but wristbanding starts right after the concert at 9:30pm. Last year, we left after the concert ended and still got cutoff. Just walk fast, haha.

I’m in CAC.

^Are the wristbands also first come first serve, or can we pick them up around 2 and still be good?

wristbands are first come first serve basis.

^I should have clarified. The movie starts at 11 but people DO leave early to go line up…at least during my freshman year for Eagle Eye. I tried leaving with my friends a little early from the concert and we couldn’t get in (the line was huge, even if they don’t start wrist banding until 9:30). I’d leave between 1/2-end of the show. I don’t think you can expect to get in right after the concert. Of course, “Burial” might not be as popular as Eagle Eye.

^“Red” is playing the night of Bruin Bash.
I believe “Buried” is on Sept. 21

how do you know when your department major meeting is?

activities fair is lame this year 'cuz it’s at royce and as one of the organizations there, they told us we can only have 2 chairs/club and we can’t give any food away… they got stricter this year :(

Lakerss, I think you’ll be fine if you come at 2, if you can’t line up earlier. We’re holding some wristbands for kids with later move-in times at the dorm locations.

To answer the thread question: I think it depends on what you like. I’d also rec Bruin Bash and Activities Fair (it’s the biggest it’s been this year). If you’re into sports/exercise, Bruin Fest (ResFest) and Sports Jamboree. Target late night run is convenient if you underpacked/forgot to pack something.

Thanks curtains. If we want to go see “Buried” on the 21st, do we have to get wristbands for it beforehand or what?

If wristbands run out, we do have to turn people away… so do try to get there in time!

Hm, usually for CEC movies, you reserve online through MyUCLA. Show up at Ackerman before the movie starts and get a wristband.
