Zipcar vs car2go

I don't plan on bringing my car to campus this fall. Has anyone had any experience with either service? There's a car2go parking spot close to Kins if I remember correctly, and the Zipcars are fairly distributed throughout campus. Which service should I give my money to? I don't plan on driving very often throughout the school year, hence leaving my car at home.

Car2Go is probably better. Zipcars cost like $25 per year, where as Car2Go only has a one time commitment fee. I see lots of Car2Go’s being driven around and none for Zipcar…

I thought Zipcar had a one-time membership fee for UT students.

UT Austin has chosen Zipcar as the official car share service for the students and faculty and staff members. There is a $35 sign up fee which is automatically desposited into your account as driving credits to be used during your first month. There are currently 8 vehicles on campus ranging from a truck to a prius to even a burnt orange Mini Cooper. However, Parking and Transportation Services has plans to expand the service and add many more vehicles to other parts of the campus. The rates are $8-$9 an hour and up to $62-$72 depending on the vehicle you select. One other thing to keep in mind is that Zipcar does not have a geo fence boundry which means you can take the car out of the city limits and even on a road trip for up to four days.

I didn’t know that about the geo fence boundary. Also, I have my own MINI at home, so the familiarity is nice. This makes my decision much, much easier. Thanks, Parking!

I’ve tried to find out if the zipcars have off campus drop off zones/areas like the car2go cars do. Does anyone know if zipcar is only on campus pick up and drop off?

Yes, you have to bring the car back to its area on campus. The locations are set so they’re easy for everyone to find, especially if someone is using the car right after you and they’re waiting for you to get back.
