Zoom H2 Portable Audio Recorder

For anyone still looking, check out the brand-new MicroTrack II from M-Audio. It was announced at the AES show in October, but just started showing up in stores in the past few weeks. It's even better than the original and they lowered the price by $100. It's more money than the Zoom, but in an A-B test, it might prove to ge superior. With any of these, a better stereo mic than the one built in or supplied with the unit would be a big improvement in the quality of recording.

Agree about the mic.
Our son has found the built in mic in the Zoom superior to his old minidisc setup but he still uses a separate stereo mic when he's 'seriously' recording something of importance.

Reviving this thread... Anyone have updates to share re. your experiences with the Zoom H2? I would like to buy one of these for S w/o a lot of shopping angst, if opinions remain positive.

Not first hand, but our son continues to love his H2 after about 6 months..

no "first hand" experience - yet

but lots of good word of mouth from owners I see with them

My son says his is great. He has used it to record audition tapes for summer programs and seems to really like it. I haven't actually seen it in action, since he is back in Indiana, but the reports are good.

My husband loves his, and wishes he had more time to spend with it to learn various options. He has learned the hard way that a blinking red light means it's ready to record but is NOT yet recording. Press the button again to record....

I think we are going to buy one for S, who is going to music school. Hoping he doesn't lose it.

S continues to love his. He made successful summer program audition CDs and a recital CD from the Zoom H2 recording - opted to save $$$ and do that recording himself rather than paying the school's recording team. He's also had a number of students ask him to record their performances and make CDs for them.

I love the thing. I'm not tech literate or interested at all and find the machine approrpriately nonchallenging to use.

Can someone link me to a good exterior mic for this?

I have used the AT882 extensively both with minidisc recorders and with digital videocams. The audio results have been superb. Seems like it ought work.

suggestions of where to purchase it?

My son loves his H2 as well. We purchased it online.

The AT882 costs $250...

The H2 is about the same price (somewhere in the $250-300 range). Plus DS got an external mike.

catbird

It seems that the internal mics for the zoom are not awful - many seem happy with them

I also assume someone wanting to upgrade those mics is looking for a real upgrade

something like the Sony ECM-MS907 (my backup mic) might or might not be much better than the Zoom's internal mics, and it still costs about $100 bucks

The Audio-Technica 882 is an enormous upgrade over the Sony. It has produced great results for me in club settings, at outdoor festivals, in festival tents, in auditoriums, in the wind, in the rain, in pretty much any setting imaginable.

Our composer daughter bought herself an H2 online after we read about it here. It is wonderful! She loves it...It is easy to use, and the recording is great. She used the recording she made herself of a piece that she wrote, that was played by a local professional quartet in a concert, for applications/auditions. It was so nice not having to bug anyone for a recording, but to do it herself :)
