Looking at new dishwashers, Kitchenaid to match other appliances or Bosch because so many people like them?
Bosch! I have two kitchen aid dishwashers and they have been a lot of trouble including the main board going out on the top of the line one. I have a Bosch in a rental property and love it. Cleans well and no issues.
I am not the kind of person who posts on these types of threads- nor do I get excited about appliances. But the performance of the Bosch cannot be believed if youāve gotten used to āotherā dishwashers. I āinheritedā a Miele when I bought the house I live in now- I couldnāt believe the price when I looked it up-- and not to be crass- it was a piece of garbage. Loud, only worked if you scraped and washed every last speck off a dish, and if you didnāt leave the door open after you ran a load, you got a funky smell a day later. My old house had a Kitchenaid which we bought new- it did certain things well (glasses and plates) but was mediocre on other things (left spots on flatware, didnāt do a great job with pots or casserole pans).
Replaced the Miele with a Bosch when the service guy told me the repair would cost more than a new one and never looked back.
Only one downside- CLEAN THE FILTER. (seriously- a couple of times a year- it does a great job cleaning everything but it will all end up in the filter- the labels off a jam jar, pieces of orzo, clumps of rice.) Buy the outside panel to āmatchā whatever else is going on in the kitchen if you care. But it is a truly quiet, high performing dishwasher.
We are on our second Bosch dishwasher. I esp like that it has a 3rd shelf. Only one complaint - and itās only an issue if you donāt run your dishwasher daily or every other day. We are just the two of us now, so we sometimes go a few days before needing to run it and we have a strange problem - it stinks. I mean, really stinks.
Iāve tried rinsing everything very carefully so that Iāve eliminated food as a source of odors (the dishwasher is so good that I donāt really have to scrape/rinse the plates before loading into the dishwasher). Iāve tried running the rinse cycle to keep it cleaner in there also. But to no avail. Iāve googled this and it turns out that Iām not the only one with this problem.
Aside from this, we are happy with the purchase. I bought a middle of the line model. I couldnāt justify buying top of the line without the promise of greater longevity.
We went from a Kitchenaid to a Bosch. No comparison. The Bosch is so much better on so many levels - cleaning ability, quietness, and the layout which allows so much more to to be loaded.
Bookreader- the stink might be from the filter. Ours catches EVERYTHING and I mean everything- grains of rice, orzo, sprigs of parsley. Now that I clean it regularly Iāve eliminated the smell-- the actual innards are shiny clean so I realized it was some organic material getting caught and then hiding in the dark for a couple of days!!!
We love our Bosch. Quiet and does a great job.
I know waaaaay to much about dishwashers. Theyāre all very hitter or miss and tend to need a lot fo repairs. Even the same model can vary from one unit to the next. Everything in our world has become incredibly reliable except DWs.
Kitchenaid is fine, but your odds are better with Bosch. I bought my last DW on sale at Costco and because I used a Costco Visa I ended up with a 5 year warranty.
On a slightly different note: does the Bosch DWs ever go on sale? Iāve been thinking about getting one (and replacing my super old KitchenAid), but the most theyāve been on sale is 10% off. Does the discount ever get better than that?
Also, what series is āmost bang for my buckā? The 500 series, or 800 series?
I have an 800 series. Got a great discount through Abt but we also bought other appliances at the same time so not sure how much they would discount for just the dw.
Here is another vote for Bosch. Weāve had ours for 10 years or so and have been very happy with it. Very quiet (thanks in part to the manual filter) and it does a good job cleaning. I remember being skeptical about how well it would dry without a heating coil, but it works surprisingly well. When the time comes to replace it, we will go with another Bosch.
I guess Iām in the minority, because weāve had much better luck with Kitchenaid than Bosch. I will never get another Bosch.
Iāve had really good history with Bosch. Iāve been living alone during Covid so havenāt been running it very often. I also noticed a smell from mine that completely disappeared when I cleaned out the bottom filter. Itās really easy to access. I also try to run some Lemi Shine dishwasher cleaner through every couple months.
Iām also going against the flow. We replaced our Bosch (which DH was never happy with) with a KitchenAid and it is much better. Cleans better, and has more room and the third rack. Dries better too. The Bosch often left some bits of residue or spots behind, and I had to open the door and air dry it for a while for any plastic on top to get dry due to the lack of drying mechanism.
I was against replacing the Bosch because I thought it was the best and that anything new would have the same problems, but well, the new KitchenAid is much better. Our dishes are cleaner and dry.
We have a Bosch. No smell problems, but we always keep the door slightly open. Itās not enough that you can see it open. Just donāt allow the āclickā. The seal is so tight, just a crack allows enough air to prevent mold/mildew, when it is not used often.
We thought it died on exactly itās 10 year birthday. Had a reputable repair person come out 3x and finally gave up (I believe), and said it was an expensive part that needed replacing. Based on the issues, I just had a āfeelingā that it was another problem, so hired another repair company. Fixed it in 20 min! (Lucked out on that one).
In the meantime, we researched other units, and asked the exact same questions. Choice came down to another Bosch or Kitchenaid (both recommended by the repair person). We would have to go with Bosch, because our cabinets are custom from the 50ās, and the Bosch is just a bit smaller shorter in depth. If your cabinets are newer and standard, neither should be a problem.
We also rarely choose the more expensive models of anything. I never use all the bells and whistles, and they typically have more things that can go wrong. Our basic Bosch cleans well, and is very quiet.
I have a KitchenAid, and it is fine. Not perfect, but fine. The one thing that I like better about the KitchenAid is the way is loads. Make sure that your dishes fit. If you have thick pottery, it can be a problem. I chose my KitchenAid because of how it loads.
I liked my 800 series Bosch, but it died in 5 years. I posted a few months ago that I placed an order for several Bosch ,Odell, but none were available. I ended up with a Miele that was a floor model. Have to say, itās the best DE ever. I like the 60 minute wash cycle. Since I donāt run mine daily, I rinse dishes and wash occasionally. Biggest difference is that the plastics come out dry.
Our kitchen had just been remodeled when we moved into our home 13 years ago. They had installed a Bosch dishwasher. It still works great. We run it probably 6 times a week and have never had any issues with it. Never any odor and until I read this thread, I didnāt even know it had a filter. We bought a low end model for our ski condo last year (not sure what brand) and it is horrible. Takes forever to clean, leaves spots everywhere and doesnāt remove any of the food left on dishes. We rinse everything really well but doubt our renters do, so feel like the dishes there are never really clean.
I have my dishes rinsed/precleaned before I load the dishwasher, as we only use our 3 rack Bosch dishwasher every 4 days. I didnāt think about the filters or left over bits of food left over in the dishwasher because I have the food entirely off the dishes before loading. I also prop the door open for everything to totally dry after unloading. The plastic stuff on upper rack - I just put it in my sink rack or dry with a towel - not annoying to me.
This is our 2nd Bosch, and typical dishwasher is to last about 12 years - which has been our experience.
I have a friend that had a Kitchen Aid that leaked underneath and had to have unit replaced/flooring fixed. After much thought, she replaced with another Kitchen Aid - but about a year later sold and relocated out of state.
Last month I clipped a Consumer Report review that highly rated Bosch. It said GE Profile costing $1370 was very goodā¦ bu Bosch Ascenta SHX3AR75UC ($700) is Excellent.
Recently I was looking at our Owner Manual for our old/1993 Maytag DW. It specifically advised to NOT rinse the dishes. We scrape the dishes, but we usually donāt rinse much. I think that works ok for us since older DW used more water.
