Senior year courses

My senior year courses:

AP Physics C (Mechanics + Electricity and Magnetism)

Dual Enrollment Math (signups arent here yet, but probably multivariable calc/linear algebra/discrete math. I finished everything at my high school, including ap calc bc and ap stats)

AP Lang

AP Gov

Jazz Band

Wind Band

Is this good enough for HYPSM? Technically I only have three academic courses at my high school. The two bands don’t really count as real classes.

why no foreign language?

What courses have you already completed? Did you take the most rigorous courses offered to you? (AOs will look at your whole HS record not just senior year)

What’s your intended major?

Keep in mind that HYPSM admissions are extremely competitive even for highly qualified students. So even if your courses are “good enough” that’s far from an assured admittance.

I hope you’re looking into and loving other schools. Especially at least one with a > 50% acceptance rate.

If you’ve completed the foreign language requirements of a school, and these course are follow-on to the typical sequences, then you likely have met the minimum requirements and will be considered for admissions. In that sense, yes, they are “good enough”.

Be aware that 95%+ of applicants have met this requirement, so you’re still in the sub-10% accept rate with this coursework.

The only missing element is foreign language - have you reached level 4 or AP in one?
Your academic courses (AP Physics C, DE math, AP Lang, AP Gov) are very rigorous and 2 music bands would indicate a solid level&personal interest.
As for HYPSM: You’d meet their basic requirements but assuming excellent grades, after making the 1st cut you’d need more to distinguish yourself and their decision would be based on other factors, such as extra curriculars, essays…

counselors have told me i’ll get the most demanding box checked. and i have 4.0 UW

You mentioned UCs in another thread. They count visual and performing arts (including music) as academic courses.

The most rigorous box check is essential so good.
what about foreign language, did I miss whether you reached level 4 or AP?

In another thread, the OP mentioned being a heritage speaker who did have to study (presumably reading and writing) through middle school and 9th grade, taking the AP course in 9th grade and scoring 5 on the AP test.

It depends on your school. Around here, 4 core courses senior year is not nearly rigorous. Kids who are done with FL add a 5th core in a different area(a second science, etc). More than 10% of the class adds a 6th core at least for one semester (many more have a 6th for junior year, year round, and usually all honors/AP). So just confirm with your counselor that you are “maxing out” rigor if you want to be most competitive for those top schools.

yes, I will get most demanding. usually people at my competitive school do 4 core senior year + a FL if they have that

eh, kinda. look for my other post: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/t/my-foreign-language-situation

Then I think you should do a 5th core in another subject. Just my opinion.

Foreign language is a core.

If you aren’t taking it, you need to replace it with another core.

Also, even if your counselor checks “most rigorous” but admissions sees that your classmates who are also applying or your school profile indicates that more rigor is possible, they will go with what is available, not the checked box.
