Hello as many of you know from my other posts and I am approaching my empty nest and trying to decide what I want to do with myself.
I am contemplating going back to vocational school. When looking at majors I have also been studying the online job ads.
To see what kinds of careers are hiring in my area. (I am thinking about some kind of allied health field)
So my question- do most companies place ads? Is this a good indicator of job availability?
Thanks
I don’t know about most companies. I worked at a university, and we advertised all open positions on our website and in area newspapers.
My D got a job in the finance industry in Chicago, and her company did not advertise open positions. They filled positions through a recruiter (how my D was hired).
The company I currently work for (higher ed technology) advertises openings on our website, and on our FB page. They may advertise some high level positions in industry-related publications.
Can you look at the websites of area hospitals or health care providers and see if they are advertising openings in areas you are considering?
I can - and I have -but wondering if that is the full story I guess. Trying to figure the “norm” .
Not many adds from private clinics, etc… and wondering if it is because they aren’t’ hiring or because they don’t usually advertise.
Thanks for answering!
There’s a third option, that they do advertise, but only in journals and on websites that are in each particular industry. The trick is to find out what trade associations, etc. are relevant for each field and check their career sections, which they all undoubtedly have.
Every job is different,it really depends on the kind of job. Generally newspaper ads and the like IME tend to be for lower skilled jobs, you would be more likely to see ads for serving people and truck drivers, or even some more skilled jobs like auto mechanics and the like. For higher end positions most companies rely on posting on job search boards, along with internal referrals and recruiters, most companies post job openings on their website.
If you are thinking of vocational training, I agree with others, the school you go to should have a placement service and they can be of help. The other thing would be checking job search boards and the websites of local health organizations that are usually part of a larger hospital network (for example, where i live, it would be Atlantic Health systems).
For my jobs for data entry type things, I do sometimes advertise locally, but honestly I use a lot of referrals from current employees and people I know. For higher level jobs I use Ladders or industry specific sites.
One vocational thing I would suggest to avoid - medical coding. You really don’t get a job from that certification. No one will hire an entry level coder, you’ll start as a medical biller and work your way up. Too many people get that certification and take the test and then zippo.
Musicprnt and I must live somewhere nearby.
Atlantic Health System is THE biggie around here. They have a great career search on there website to give you an idea of openings.
Really, before going for an outside program, you might consider something to get in the door. After 6 months, you can move laterally or up. Training is available as well as tuition reimbursement. Just a thought.
