1) What would you do with a free afternoon tomorrow?

This is probably a really dumb, specific question, but I need help clarifying this one short answer question.

Do they mean it as in- "What do you usually do on free afternoons?"

Or as "Ideally, if you could do anything tomorrow, what would you do?"

I know they're pretty similar but my answers to either would be pretty different.

I rarely have free afternoons, but I put what i’d realistically do if I did have a free afternoon.

I took it to mean the second one. That seems to be what they were looking for.

It’s not something esoteric or literal. It is open-ended. Be creative. It’s not some sort of test. It could be a normal answer, a funny one, a dull one, or anything etc… Just be yourself, be honest, and it could be either of those as long as it makes sense in context.

I also think it is the second one.

Just answer honestly. You probably shouldn’t be saying piloting an airplane, scaling rock cliffs or bungee jumping, unless you actually do any of those things with regularity.

I see the question as asking, assuming you have absolutely zero obligations tomorrow, what you would typically or most likely be doing.

I think it would be hilarious if you somebody wrote “I refuse to answer this because there’s no such thing as a free afternoon at Yale.”

work on your Harvard application

How many people are reusing their Yale supplemental essay for Harvard? Everyone?

Lol @ bioslick!

If I ever finish my Yale essay then I will

“I’d rejoice because all my college applications would be done.”

WL silver: Haha, agreed!

Actually, I don’t think this would be considered very hilarious, because it’s not really true for most students.

I think I would say that this question is probably designed to give you the opportunity to show that you are a well-rounded person, preferably one who doesn’t just work all the time. Thus, for example, I would not suggest answering, “Get in a few extra hours of violin practice,” even if that is what you probably would do. “Go to see a movie with friends” would be a much better answer, in my opinion.

I think it’s the second one.

I don’t really agree with that. I mean there are IMs or Master’s Teas nearly every single afternoon, so already a student would have something to do even if they were not involved anywhere else at all.

I can see that there are no “required” afternoon commitments, but I’ve never had an afternoon where there’s nothing to do.

A free afternoon is not the same as one where there’s nothing to do–it’s one where there’s nothing you *have *to do.

I think it’d be pretty funny whether it’s true or not…

I thought about stating that I’d sell it on ebay and see how much I could get for it, but turned to a more conventional answer in the end. : )

I kept it simple. Kayaking and a cookout with the family.

I miss kayaking, :(
