Truer words have seldom been spoken.

This CC!

Status and rank is everything as defined by CC.

Challenge that at your risk!

Yawn. That link has already been posted elsewhere on cc. But not for the purpose of trying to be purposefully provocative.

Here’s one of the earlier links http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/14844600-post10.html

The Fiske guide is my favorite. I read everyone I could find.

Note that reason number 10, is actually a reason to look at the data that USNWR collects.

And here. This is a duplicate thread of this one http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/1391516-ten-reasons-ignore-u-s-news-rankings.html?

Perhaps its better to do a little reading/research before posting a duplicate thread.

Yawn.
Reed has ignored USNews since 1995.
UsNews also has lots of good data. It isn’t that rebellious to use your own criteria for rank.

What no follow up?

I’ve never been a fan of USNWR rankings.

USNWR rankings are interesting. Here are two of theirs, one in the US and the other the world. The overlapping list doesn’t match, e.g., Princeton becomes #8 in the world list when only US colleges are included. Obviously, each ranking weighs different variables differently. We need rankings from competitors.

I can think of 10 reasons to ignore certain threads and thread starters… ;)

^^^Obviously you don’t think those reasons are adequate to ignore the OP to this thread, because so far three out of ten responses in here are yours.

Nope-- its 3 of 12 ( now 4 of 13). Two of the posts were links to other discussions on this topic. Third was trying to make lemonade out of lemons.

^^^
The original post is not a response. I can pretty much guarantee that you will feature prominently in any thread started by AD, a fact which probably brings him great enjoyment and encouragement. I would just ignore anyone who annoyed me that much.

Well, maybe not. That’s not really my style either :)

Apologies- I looked at the total post count.

It would be lovely if for once one of these cranky ol’ threads was instead about something positive about the college process/experience. A person can dream :)

Its pretty darned obvious that his threads are intended to be provocative. So why not play along a bit??

Oh, and for the record, note this additional new thread gem. FWIW, my postcount there? zero. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/1391787-lows-higher-ed.html

annasdad: It has been suggested to you before that it really is all about fit for the individual student. As far as I can tell you have never acknowledged that certain schools can be a good fit for anyone. I remember you writing that Swarthmore isn’t as “prestigious” as Harvard. I posted that in my world it may sometimes be more “prestigious” and you responded something like "not to the man in the street’. What the “man in the street” thinks really is meaningless to me.

No one I know ever discusses or pays any attention to these rankings. Never ever. Everyone thinks they have more intelligence and discretion to judge “best” than these magazines. There is no controversy.

oh wait - maybe you are the “man in the street”? Maybe I do care :(

alh, you continue to raise straw men. I’ve never made any comments about “fit” one way or the other.

And if you truly believe that Swarthmore has the same cachet with the man in the street that Harvard does - or that nobody pays any attention to USNWR - I’m going to suggest you may not be living in the real world.

To reiterate what an earlier poster said:

Reasons for ignoring USNWR
1-My school is ranked low
2-My school is falling in the rankings

18

???
