Awesome journalism opportunities (Daily Princetonian, etc.)

World-class orchestras and ensembles

Bruce Wayne (from Batman Begins, Dark Knight, etc.) studied there! lol

James Madison: Father of Constitution. He also studied there.

So many royal family members from around the world studied there (Morocco, Jordan, etc.).

Wicked awesome commencement speakers (Steve Carrell)

Princeton is reality’s closest version of HOGWARTS! (unlike harvard…a cluster of old, decaying red bricks)

Toy Story’s Andy is planning on going there at the end of Toy Story 3.
101. Princeton is MAGICAL!

Just have to say that #4, the Intensely Loyal Alumni Network, is true, true, more true.

I must say, given some of these “reasons”, if the majority of the graduates are like those that compiled this list, even if I get in, I’m avoiding this place like the plague.

^^ Cool story bro, your opinion really matters.

I just don’t see the reason to put down other (fine and comparable) institutions. It all just seems like a ***** measuring contest.

While there are several good points on this list, here are some that are less than brilliant:

NUMBER ONE ON EVERY COLLEGE RANKING (Forbes, USNews, etc.)
^^Shallow

1 in highest paid graduates!!!

^^Shallow + Stupid Metric

Location: safe and calm. (Unlike New Haven and Harlem.)
^^ Cheap shot #1

Princeton is reality’s closest version of HOGWARTS! (unlike harvard…a cluster of old, decaying red bricks)
^^ incorrect… Oxford/Cambridge followed by UChicago IMO

Nobel Prize winners, MacArthur fellows, etc. teaching freshmen! (unlike Harvard where TAs teach even seniors)
^^Cheap Shot #2

The cooler, smarter, more attractive kids go there.
^^K…

The students actually have social lives
^^As opposed to…

“Late Meal”

Preach, baby, preach.

Decades later in life, it becomes clear that highest paid isn’t necessarily a shallow metric, oh young ones.

Decades later in life, it becomes clear that the highest paid has more to do with major, drive, motivation to make money, than whether you went to Harvard or Princeton.

Thank you AIMEhigh… Some people don’t seem to realize that average graduate salary statistics have more to do with vocation distribution than actual earnings potential…

and @Alumother, I never said it was a shallow metric. I merely said that whoever added that metric to the list was shallow to boast of it, and that the metric itself is “stupid” (though in retrospect I can see how you would be confused, so I apologize). If the metric actually measured any meaningful quantity (it doesn’t), I would be amiable to remove my latter gripe, but the former would still hold.

And I would make an addendum to my complaint with 73. It is incorrect as well, as Forbes (which is quite a poor ranking) and USNews (which has it tied with Harvard for #1) are the only major rankings (THE, QS, WM, ARWU don’t) which have Princeton at no 1 . Not that I put any stock into rankings… I’m just pointing out inaccuracies in the point.

1 history department (I’m a history major have eyes on Princeton for grad school).

Also I wouldn’t put Cornel West as a positive thing for Princeton. ;-)

Franko, please forgive me and I know this is going to sound incredibly mean and I really don’t mean it to be buuuuut…

How do you expect, as a 44 year old community college student in Texas, to go to a place like Princeton or U of C for graduate school. They deny top students at top 10 institutions. It just seems a bit naive to me.

And Cornel West is a pretty cool cat. I have some issues with him, but they are the exact opposite of yours, so…

Perhaps you are right hevydevy. Having said that from what I’ve heard they can’t discriminate based on age. Yes, I’m at a community college (South Texas College) but I will be receiving my undergraduate (history) degree from the UT system. I currently have a 3.88 GPA, Phi Theta Kappa, Honors classes, blah blah blah which I realize is the usual stuff someone needs. Apart from that I’ll need to score well on my GRE (for which I’m already working on). I’m currently an MDiv candidate at a seminary. If all goes as planned I should have my doctorate from there right around the time I also receive my bachelors in history. I’m thinking of double majoring (other major in political science). I’ll be visiting all schools I will be applying to in order to speak with faculty. Throw in affirmative action (I’m Hispanic & I’m not for AA but hey it’s there) & that might raise my chances a bit as well. I’m fluent in 3 languages (English, Spanish, Bahasa Indonesian plus Greek from seminary I wouldn’t say fluent but I can parse & translate) which is more than most American students. Are my chances slim? Yes, but then no one said it would be easy. I figure if I don’t get in I might make into in UT Austin (17th ranked history dept according to US News & World Report) & has 4 professors that I would be honored to work with, or perhaps some other university in Texas like Rice which has a strong Southern US History department with John Boles (which wouldn’t be shabby at all), SMU or if I absolutely strike out I’ll wind up here where I am earning my PhD from UTPA. I have no illusions about my chances, but honestly I don’t think I’ll be out of my league for graduate school by any means in terms of being prepared when you look at the whole picture not just where I am at the moment, or perhaps even where I’ll be when I earn my undergraduate degree.
Don’t worry about sounding mean. Your post is actually very motivational for me. I could read it & get ticked, or get motivated to work even harder. While other kids younger than me are majoring in beer bonging & partying, I’m popping off A’s in all my classes, tutoring, & reading 2-3 books per week. Thanks for the encouragement via casting doubt.
Regarding Cornel West… I find West motivational in that he is very disciplined about his reading habits. I don’t agree with every point of view he has. Actually hardly any but that doesn’t mean I don’t read his material. My comment about him had a tongue in cheek thing that would have been understood better in conversation than over the net where some points are lost in translation.
Anyways I’m rambling. Thanks again hevydevy.

By the way hevydevy I recall reading another post where you stated you were accepted to U of Chicago, congratulations. I believe you were waiting/hoping for Brown, hope you get to have to choose. Chicago is my 1st choice school. It’s good to have high goals.
