1098-T Discrepancy

Good! This will fix one of the problems with the 1098-T.

Please take note of @kelsmom ’ s note. I have seen and heard about a large increase in IRS enforcement actions against undergraduate students this year. Both from students at my institution and from clients and discussion in the tax prep community.

The 1098-T is basically useless. Keep your own records and hope your school is willing to provide a statement of your account.

Could the IRS issue have anything to do with a 1098T showing a higher scholarship amount than qualified tuition and related fees, but then an AOTC credit is claimed?

In our case my D is reporting scholarships in excess of tuition as part of her income, and we in turn get to claim fees and books for the AOTC.

It’s not just undergrads getting the dreaded letter from the IRS - I have graduate students, and I have had a number of them contact me for statement print-outs in recent weeks.

The IRS has been aggressive on grad students for awhile now. The undergrads are new.
