I just got two pieces of mail from my son's university...one was a check and the other had our address but a different name. I wasn't sure if I should open it but then I got curious. Glad I opened it because it was the 1098-T with my son's ss# and the correct address but a totally different name. I called the cashier's office around 1 pm, but got voicemail so I left a message. Then I decided I wanted something in writing so I emailed them details. I don't know if they can discuss anything with me because of the FERPA laws but I hope I find out something soon. This seems like a big deal to me...is it?

Also wondering if I can do my taxes before I get a new form (I am hoping that is what they are planning on doing). It looks like the numbers are correct, even though the name is not.

What a mess!

make sure the college has his correct info in their main database.

Last spring, I got a letter from the FA office of NYU. It said, I'm not kidding, this is their words, "we have good news and bad news for you. The good news is that you are being accepted to NYU. The other good news is that you may need financial assistance to attend and we will be able to assist you. The bad news is that, in reviewing your file, we realized that we have not yet received a completed FAFSA for you"..

Imagine my utter panic because I know we did the FAFSA with the correct data. I was looking at the copy we submitted.

A quick call to the FA office revealed that they had a digit in my son's ss# wrong in their files. Somewhere along the way a 4 had become a 9 when someone manual took data from the application and typed it into 'the system'.

Don't panic. Last year, DS received his W-2 for one of his jobs. It arrived here at the end of January...the last one to arrive. Trouble was...it was someone else's W-2. They mailed it to DS but it was NOT his. He made a phone call, mailed back the wrong one and had the correct one within a couple of days. Mistakes happen.

Thanks for the input. It does panic me a little because this is a form that is sent to the IRS. It makes it look like my son has an alias or worse yet, someone has stolen his identity. We did a credit check on him tonight to make sure this is some weird mistake that the school has made and nothing else. I just realized that Monday is a holiday so I will not find anything out until at least Tuesday.

I hate waiting.

Thanks again!
