1098-T question

I am a long time reader although this is my first post.

My D1's 1098-t is wrong. In box 5 which list scholarships/grants it lists an outside loan that she has. This is a local loan with no interest, 40% forgiveness on repayment with good gpa etc. She actually goes each semester while she is home and shows this organization her gpa and they write her a check which she turns in at school.

I am doing my taxes on TurboTax and am wondering if I can just change the way I enter the info for the 1098-T into TT to make it correct?

I have also read about electing to use the scholarships/grants for room and board instead of tuition to take advantage of tax credits. I am also wondering how do you go about this? Do you change the amounts you enter off of the 1098-T? She has several grants/scholarships but none are tuition only.

Before “changing” a 1098-T as I enter it into my tax return, I’d contact the school…explain the situation…and ask them to issue a corrected 1098-T. It’s common for 1098-T forms to contain mistakes…we read about it on this forum all the time.
