1098T and tax time

My S received his 1098T and has $5K more in scholarships than tuition.
1. He will claim, on his 1040, the amount of scholarship, minus fees and books , as taxable income?

On our tax software, it has this
"The amount of Scholarships or Grants shown on the Form 1098-T is $x. This is usually the amount to enter below. However, if any grants or scholarships were included as wages on a Form W-2, then you wouldn't enter that type of scholarship or grant."

He didn't receive a W2 including this amount but he is listing is as income.

There is another help button that has this:
"If you are a candidate for a degree, the portion of your scholarship or grant used for the following is non-taxable and should be entered here.
Tuition and fees required for enrollment or attendance
Books, supplies, and equipment required for your courses"

So whatever he claims as taxable income can be deducted from the scholarship amount for us and the only amount that I put in is what was spent on fees and books since he is listing taxable income?

Thanks for your time

There are several recent threads on this topic in the Financial Aid and Scholarships forum. I suggest you read through them and then if you have additional questions post your questions there.
