Hello, I'll be starting at UMD as a freshman in the fall.

I had my orientation, and how my schedule worked out put me with 12 credits (it's still 6 classes). I have 2 science lectures, 2 science labs (Which are only 1 credit each), an honors course, and an honors seminar for my first semester.

Keep one thing in mind, though, I'm coming in with over 30 credits from my AP classes in high school. I have completed all of my math, English, and biology requirements for my major (Animal Science- Pre-Professional), so that is why I'm not adding one of those classes into my schedule. I was going to take MATH241 (calc 3) but it would just be empty credits.

I also attempted to add a Spanish class to start my major, but the level I tested into (301) was already completely full.

So, any recommendations? Should I get on the waitlist for a Spanish class, should I take a 1 or 2 credit Gen ed course to get it out of the way? (I've already met a lot of my Gen Ed requirements from APs). Or do you think a light load is okay to start out with to get adjusted to college?

Thanks :D

*Spanish class to start my MINOR, sorry about the misprint

Get on the waitlist for Spanish!!! You’ll get in very soon, and the sooner you get a start on your minor the better. That way, if there are other semesters where you want to take a lighter load (study abroad, or for other reasons) you’ll be able to.

Also, most of the Gen Ed classes that I saw were three credits, I’m not sure which ones you’re looking at though.

^Agree with oceanicole…get on the waitlist. D2 was on waitlists for the first several Spanish classes for her major (same issue…needed 300 level classes). She always got what she wanted…There seems to be a lot of people who get into the higher level Language courses and then realize they are in over their head. Also, check into the Language House and all they offer…you can attend several of their events and then apply to live their for next year. If you like it there, are very involved in activities, and stay on good terms (you have to interview each year) you can live there through the rest of your undergrad years.

OP, just to let you know, even though the 1-credit science labs are technically separate, they are usually combined with the 3-credit course to be considered a single 4-credit course. So right now you are only signed up for four courses, one of which is the 1-credit HONR100, which is why it makes sense that you have the minimum number of credits.
I definitely agree with the others who said to get on the waitlists ASAP. I also think you should sign up for another class that doesn’t conflict with your current schedule or the waitlisted Spanish classes because you don’t want to end up with only 12 credits if for some reason you can’t get into a Spanish class. You might as well get COMM107 or an I-series out of the way if you can’t get started on your minor!
