13 Disciplined for Jet Crash

Wow.
The Associated Press: Marine Corps punishes 13 for San Diego jet crash

Four officers (senior!) relieved of duty, and others disciplined (career-ending?) for the jet crash into a San Diego neighborhood that killed a family on the ground. The briefing apparently included a clear explanation of the bad decisions.

I continue to be amazed at how often the military requires officers to take responsibility for decisions made under their command -- such a contrast with the general lack of responsibility displayed in most of the rest of our government. (See the banking crisis and the SEC & Office of Thrift Supervision, where virtually nobody has been held accountable for a huge mess.)

Very tough on the officers involved, but it says something about what the Marines expect from their officers.

Or it says something about satisfying the public...

Good for the Marine Corps for standing up on this investigation.

It is a tragedy all around - but read the results. There were many many mistakes made that could have completely prevented the crash and deaths of 4 innocent civilians.

I admire the Marines for standing up, telling it straight, and taking responsibility. I wish that other units of our government did half as well on this front. I also admire young people who are willing to take on jobs as Naval and Marine officers with the knowledge that they can be held responsible and accountable.

Just days after this crash, we moved to now live directly under the take off path of the Miramar-based F-18's....sometimes the roar of their engines are so loud you can't even talk in the room for a few seconds.

When a good friend asked us how we could live with that I told him that frankly I am grateful for the continued training of our fighter pilots. "It's the sound of F R E E D O M!" I told him, and I make it a point to pray for the safety of the crew and all who are responsible for the care of these machines.

As a neighbor, an American and the mother of a soon-hopeful Marine officer I am very relieved to see the professional manner of disclosure and responsibility the Corps is demonstrating in this terrible tragedy.
