James Simons, an MIT PhD grad who taught at Stony Brook before becoming a multi-billionaire, had and still has a huge impact on making Stony Brook’s math department as strong as it is.
It makes me laugh that their captions have nothing to do with math. They should say why this school is s great choice for math majors, not that Matthew McConaughey attended.
The Princeton Review suggests colleges for math in its sampling “Great Schools for Mathematics Majors” (Harvey Mudd, MIT, UChicago, Caltech, Haverford, Harvard, Hamilton, Bowdoin, Reed, Rice, Carleton, St. Olaf . . .). These schools generally represent excellent options for students interested in choosing an undergraduate college that is strong in math.
