This coming August I'm going to be in college for the first time! I'm excited and nervous at the same time. does anyone have any advice or help for me? It's an all girl college, and is small. Can anyone give me some help on what to bring, how to juggle everything, and college life?

honestly i think the best advice i can give is to personally talk to someone who has the experience.

Yes! I was just thinking about this yesterday. Every semester, some freshman tells me that they bought all of their books brand new at the book store and it cost them their life savings and first born child. Don’t do this!

First, wait until the first day of class to find out what text books you will and wont need. Some times professors send out emails before hand and they’re usually accurate so you can use those too. Second, if it says “optional”, don’t buy it. Get it later in the semester if it turns out you want it. Lastly, you need to check out bookrenter and chegg. Both are great websites to RENT your books from. What I do is compare prices on bookrenter, chegg, amazon and ebay before deciding which to buy from. It takes a little extra time but it’s definitely worth it. Also, amazon has textbook buy backs and it will tell you how much you can get for it at the end of the semester. Sometimes it’s cheaper to buy it there and sell it back at the end of the semester. Your campus bookstore probably does buy backs too.

On a related note, I think you can get special deals on amazon if you tell them you’re a college student. I got free two day shipping for six months from one deal

Good luck!

^So true. I made this mistake…

manage your time. It is a must.

Food is often given away for free at school events, also a good place to socialize.

Use professor office hours.

Be orginized.

alright thanks anything else?

This has already been answered in many places here at College Confidential. But add the guides at studentadvisor.com

I am on the site but I can’t figure out how to use it

I’ve got about 10 links I could PM you if you like. From what I understand we aren’t allowed to link to places, particularly blogs, and some of these are blogs.

1) Go to class.

2) If you’re in the dorms leave the door open

3) Clubs, join them, but only join two or three. That way you can commit and be active.

4) Keep up your GPA. Don’t kill yourself over it, but don’t let it slip too far.

5) Office hours are your friend, even if you aren’t sure how to use them.

6) Bring lots and lots of socks and underwear. Laundry sucks.

7) Pick your free classes by the professor not just by what sounds cool.

8) Be organized in every way. Clutter free room, clutter free computer, clutter free mind.

9) Know what resources you have. Colleges will have counseling, tutors, and a million other things for you.

10) Learn where your classes are before the first day of class. Also leave early just in case.

11) Do the reading. This doesn’t mean that you need to read and understand every word but the book can help clarify stuff and helps you learn it a little better. Eventually you might find you don’t need to do the reading but at least try at first.

12) Be mindful of other students. Don’t talk in lecture, don’t scream and run around the halls at 2 AM, hold doors open, and offer a helping hand once in a while.

13) If you have a credit card don’t be and idiot with it. Don’t buy stuff you don’t have the money for and pay it off.

14) If it is valuable keep it out of the sight and know the serial number.

15) If you have a bike get a good lock and always be sure you lock it around the frame and not the tire. This way you still have the bike in a week.

16) Don’t procrastinate, at least not too much.

17) Save your work often.

18) Exercise. If you start now and are consistent you’ll have a healthy thing to do to destress for the rest of your life.

19) Don’t eat out all the time.

20) Don’t act like a freshmen. Act like you’ve been there and you own the place.

And now I feel lazy. I’ve still got more I can hunt down if you want.

I second everything Humanoid says.

“dont leave for tomorrow what you can do today”

In other words do not procrastinate. I know you have heard it before. But trust me if you stay on top of things and get them done. Your life will be a lot easier.
