2.8 GPA (Unweighted)/2050 SAT. Where can I get in?

Critical Reading - 700
Math - 630
Writing - 720

My extracurriculars are mostly music stuff; I spent the past summer at Berklee School of Music's 5-week musician program, I play with a local church praise band and regularly in a country/southern rock cover band. I played in the pep band at my old school and sung in a church choir for freshman/sophomore year.

For freshman and sophomore year, I went to a private college prep school, and for junior and senior year I have been attending a local magnet school specializing in the arts. Most of my classes have been honors classes, and I've taken four of each of the core classes, but I only took two foreign language classes.

My top choice for college is Berklee School of Music, but I'm not a fan of keeping all my eggs in one basket, so I'm looking for other colleges that I think would be a good match.

Other schools I've considered are places like Boston College, NYU, and Hofstra, but I'm pretty sure I've got no chance at BC or NYU. What I like about those colleges is their proximity to big cities and the whole "liberal arts" thing. To be honest, I don't really know what I want to do if I can't be a musician, so I think a liberal arts education would be good for me.

Where else would you guys recommend?

Northwestern - reach
Oberlin - reach/high match
Lawrence - match
Syracuse - match
CUNY Queens - safety
Evansville - safety

University of Chicago seems like exactly what you’re looking for. Though it is pretty selective it has a great music program along with many other options.

U of Chicago would definitely be out of reach with your gpa

Berklee School of Music, Boston

Chicago has no music performance program for any level and has minimal musical undergrad offering. The music program they are known for is a graduate program in musical theory.

Doesn’t University of Rochester have a good music program? Eastman???

[The Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts](http://music.calarts.edu/)

[Apply to CalArts | california institute of the arts](http://calarts.edu/applycalarts)

Admission to CalArts is competitive and considered mainly on the basis of demonstrated talent, creativity and commitment. CalArts welcomes applications for admission from anyone committed to the visual, performing or writing arts. Students are admitted on a full-time basis only and commence studies almost exclusively in the fall semester.

I have a special fondness for Calarts, but you should look at it underneath the viewpoint of what you want. However, this school is dependent on your portfolio/experience, so it looks like a good fit for your particular resume.

Oberlin is a huge reach (OP would be in the bottom 3% of GPAs) and probably for Rochester as well.

What is the OP’s weighted GPA?

Would he have a chance at Rice?

Eastman is one of the best music schools in the country. Your SAT scores I think are fine for U of Rochester but your GPA might be too low. Have you considered Ithaca College? While Ithaca is not a large city, the college has a highly respected music program. Their mid range SAT scores would put you in the top 25% which I believe would off set your somewhat low GPA.

^^^

Good suggestion!

And, if the school has rolling admissions, it can help if you apply ASAP. Schools with rolling admissions are often more “forgiving” earlier in the admissions season then they are later on.

What’s behind the low GPA? Did you have a really bad freshman year with an upward grade trend since then? Did you have some major disruption in your health or family life that impacted your grades?

If you just have been consistently under-performing academically, given your actual ability, it would result in a different set of recommendations than if you had had a life crisis or slow start.

If you’re looking at Berklee, you should look at Belmont. Has “classical” music, “contemporary” music, and music business, songwriting…
