I have really good grades and extra-curriculars. I want to go to a really good college, the problem is I only have 2 years of a foreign language. I took latin freshman year and in summer school but my teacher left his job and my school never hired a new latin teacher. I didn't take a new language because I planned to take spanish junior year, summer school, and senior year. Now I am a junior and I found out I cannot take summer school this year. Will it look bad that I only have 2 years of foreign language?

You planned to take Span 1 this year- are you? Have you explored online courses? Your GC can exlain that the teacher left. But, the better the college, the more they will expect that you found some solution. Lots of kids who want a “really good college” do continue lang at a cc or online. That’s your competition. Really depends on what you think a good college is- check their requirements. Some do say 2 years is fine.

High ranked colleges often expect to see three to four years of the same foreign language but they often state that as a recommendation and not a requirement and there are many who get admitted with only two who otherwise have outstanding credentials. Nevertheless, you should understandit is somewhat of a weakness in your application for those high ranks if you have only two.

Note, many colleges do require at least two years of the same foreign language and that includes a lot of colleges not just higher ranked ones. I assume you are now taking Spanish 1 and you will need to complete at least Spanish 2.

Drusba is right. It is not a requirement. However, it is recommended. You could enroll in an online course and gain credit. It would be helpful to you and you couple possibly place out of taking foreign language in college.
