my counselor said that 08-09 will be the most competitive because it will be the year that the most kids are graduating from high school across the country.

USA Births by Year. The norm in most states for 2008 graduates were the 1990 births.

1986 3,731,000
1987 3,829,000
1988 3,913,000
1989 4,021,000
1990 4,179,000
1991 4,111,000
1992 4,084,000
1993 4,039,000
1994 3,979,000
1995 3,892,000
1996 3,899,000
1997 3,882,000

Granny's numbers agree with the research I've seen, which says the college class of 2012 was the hardest applicant year (a continuous trend of growing difficulty up until that point) and that things will only loosen up from now on.

No way are members of the high school class of '14 or '15 going to have it hardest. The worst is already over.
