2008 Michigan Football

You think Michigan will be 2-10?

[/quote]

No, that's more or less what I hope will happen.

A2Wolves, you actually wish a 2-10 season on Michigan? Wow!

sorry, I promise I'm not trolling. But do you honestly think Michigan will lose against MSU at home? Stats say otherwise. MSU hasn't won against Michigan since 2001...and hasn't won away at Michigan stadium since 1990. Just would like to point that out. Well it'd be a historic day if MSU beats michigan on its own turf. lol I'll go back to my own board now :)

Alexandre, I don't think a win against Wisconsin is likely at this point, but I do agree in regards to NU and Illinois.

And anyway, Sports Illustrated is ridiculous. I think the departure of players and arrival of Rodriguez has opened the door for longtime Michigan haters to predict poor outcomes to their hearts' content. Things will be different this season, yes, and perhaps the roster is not as talented as in years past, but there is no way Michigan will not even play in a bowl game.

Why not? Michigan has had a bowl game and a winning season the past 33 years. I always root for the upsets, except when playing teams I don't like (Illinois and Purdue).

SI is never accurate with their predictions. Now I know we will have a good season.

If they cant find a solid starting quarterback that fits Rich Rodriguez's scheme, don't expect a .500 or above record

^true true... our offense needs to find a strong qb right now.

Threet is a prototypical NFL QB. He may not be lightning-quick or suit RR's system perfectly, but he will be effective and he has the WRs and TEs to make him look good. This year's offense will not be prolific, but it will get the job done in most games. In oter words, RR is NOT going to die by the spread. If he cannot find a QB to run the spread, he will adjust his system to suit a more standard offense. In other words, when RR is handed lemons, he will make a lemonade. Anybody who thinks this team will somehow go below .500 this year does not understand college football.

"in other words, when RR is handed lemons, he will make a lemonade."

WHAT??? I did not understand that analogy at all.

it means this:
1. RR is well known for using the spread offense
2. if he gets a standard qb instead he will make traditional offense instead of possibly failing by making a spread offense

1a. RR is well known for selling orange juice
2a. if he gets lemons he will make lemonade instead of failing at making orange juice

LOL, that's a good one.

"WHAT??? I did not understand that analogy at all."

J89, all I mean is that Michigan does not have a QB that can currently run the spread. As such, RR is going to have a more traditional offense this year, until a QB capable of running the spread comes along. To assume that he is going to fail because he is using a prototypical, drop back QB to run the spread is very simplistic. It does not take a genius to run a standard offense. RR will probably start with a hybrid offense until a QB capable of running the spread emerges. That could take a couple of seasons.

"^true true... our offense needs to find a strong qb right now."

Michigan has a strong QB. He is young and probably not the second coming of Chad Henne, but he was highly recruited out of HS and he is supposed to be quite good. I think Threet is going to surprise many.

"LOL, that's a good one."

I am glad you found it funny A2Wolves. I doubt you will be laughing when Michigan ends the season with an 8-4 record and an invite to a decent Bowl like the Capital One Bowl. Afterall, you are hoping that Michigan goes 2-10.

My predictions for 2008:

Utah: Loss
Miami: Win
Notre Dame: Loss
Wisconsin: Loss
Illinois: Win
Toledo: Win
Penn State: Loss
Michigan State: Win
Purdue: Win
Minnesota: Win
Northwestern: Win
OSU: Win

"To assume that he is going to fail because he is using a prototypical, drop back QB to run the spread is very simplistic."

That's why I included the word possibly. Also, even if I hadn't, the point of the explanation was to make the concept simple in order that it could be understood by someone who did not understand the original. yeah

Also, why do you think we will beat OSU but lose to Utah?

There are several reasons why I think Michigan will beat OSU.

1) I think RR is going to make a lot of adjustments as the season unfolds. He is only starting to understand the potential of his players and their strengths and weaknesses.

2) The Offense is very young, particularly the OL. By the end of the season, the Offense will be running more smoothly.

3) The team will be more comfortable with the new coach by the end of the season, particularly the offense.

4) I think OSU is a must-win for any first year coach. It sets the tone for their entire career at the University, whether it is OSU or Michigan.

5) We have lost 4 straight to OSU. The players on this team are going to really want this one.

"5) We have lost 4 straight to OSU. The players on this team are going to really want this one."

Yeah, Henne, Long, and Hart all "really" wanted that one last year. OSU just has too much talent for Michigan, even if Michigan wants it. Logically, Michigan lost all their stars and OSU kept almost all of them. OSU is returning, what, 18 starters? It's something ridiculous. The only teams in the Big Ten with the talent to beat OSU are Wis, PSU, and the Illini. You might as well start practicing the phrase, "Just wait until next year". Oh yeah, I look forward to having my Nittany Lions break our losing streak against you this year. I think beating you will solidify our Rose bowl berth, considering we'll probably only lose to OSU, this year.

^^ Quite the pessimist.

JEC, you obviously did not watch the 2007 Michigan vs OSU game. Hart and Henne missed the game leading up to the OSU game on injuries and they weren't fully healed to play vs OSU. Although both tried to play vs OSU, they were too banged up to be effective.

As for the only teams to have the talent to beat OSU, I would have to disagree. Only a couple of teams in the Big 10 lack the talent to beat any other team. Michigan is certainly not short on talent on either side of the ball.

And JEC, don't assume that PSU will definitely beat Michigan. Like you, I think PSU will probably win, but Michigan managed to beat PSU without Henne and with a partially injured Manningham last year. Like I said, Michigan has talent at all times. This year will be an average year by our standards, but average by Michigan standards means 8-4 or 9-3.
