2009-2010 CCS Profile From College Board Tax Return Question

Hey everyone,

I'm planning on transferring schools this fall and the deadline for the CCS Profile is March 2.

My question is it says to use your parents' 2007 Income Tax Returns to provide the financial information throughout the application and then estimate the 2008 Tax Return figures..I don't have access to the my parents' 2007 income tax return, but I do have their 2008 filed tax return, and all the info from the 2008 is what I substituted for the 2007 questions and when it asked, what do you estimate for 2008, I put in the actual figures from their return since I didn't have to estimate.

Is that alright to do? I don't really get why they're asking for 2007 information when this is for the 2009-2010 school year...I know that when I did my FAFSA, it all asked for 2008 info and I had no problems with that, but now I'm kind of trippin over whether I should get my parents to look for and fax the 2007 return..it's pretty much the exact same information, except they made about $10,000 less than the previous year (but all real estate, savings, and all info other than gross income is exactly the same), so anyone know if it will be fine to leave as is?

Thanks

If your parents cannot find the 07 taxes. Ask them to call the tax man or woman that prepared them and just get a copy, It m ight be quicker and they can fax them to you. Mine did that without charge due to college circumstances.

^^^ Yeah, but I’m trying to find out if it really matters if I give them the most current tax information instead of 2007’s. Still don’t understand why they are requesting 2007 tax information when every other source wants 2008 info and I am filling out the 2009-2010 CSS, you’d think the 2008-2009 would want the 2007 info.

Derexican,

When I filled out the 2009-2010 Profile for each of my kids, it asked for 2008 tax information, 2007 tax information, and projections for 2009. However, the way the instructions were worded in the Preapplication Worksheet differed for the two kids. For high school senior who will not file taxes and parents=will file and for whom I did the initial registration in 12/2008 the wording is similar to what you describe…e.g for PI-105D: “Estimate you parents’ 2008 wages…using their 2007 IRS Form…”. For returning college student who had filed taxes and parents did file before completing the Profile in 2009 the wording is PI-105 “Enter the 2008 wages…your parents reported on their 2008 IRS Form…” The instructions and which questions asked are customized based on what you input in that initial registration…Did you enter “Will file” for your parents?

Thanks so much for the info Lunar, turns out I accidentally clicked that they did not file their 2008 returns yet in the registration part so that’s why it was asking for 2007 information.

Got my question answered. :)
