2009-2010 Med school applicants

Family members here have been doing some proof reading. I love when the question has 2000 characters allowed, then another school asks the same question and allow 500 char…serious editing.

500 char?? I find myself hoping that’s a typo… can’t say much in 500 characters!

Nah, 500 chars is no typo. I had several :(

Dude that’s terrible.

Man I can’t believe two weeks ago I wanted to be verified to start my secondaries…these are draining! 11 of 19 done though with two weeks to get the rest done before I head out of the country. I do have two interviews at good schools that I really like and no rejections (yet), so at least I’m getting some relatively instant gratification :)

We learned something this month.
DD got all her LORs submitted to her UG university letter service, she then had them mailed to TMDSAS & AMCAS at $20 each. Instead she could have submitted them all once to TX and paid $4 to the TX affiliated Interfolio account to mail the packet to AMCAS.

Also, there are half a dozen or so schools which do not use AMCAS letter service so she will have to do her letters from Interfolio to them, too.

She has been stressing the TX special evaluation forms and just learned in a conversation that “the schools actually prefer the letter packet” Grrr, so why bother with the evaluation forms!! She is no longer worrying about those forms, what a relief.

Wow, TX was just verified.

They don’t wait for LORs or anything other than the transcripts, so a word to future applicants, go ahead and submit TX first and mail the check before you bother to submit, as they won’t put your file in line until they are paid and do not take credit cards.

Also, don’t waste time awaiting the evaluations if the professors do not submit them w.in a week or two of your submitting the TMDSAS app, just send your letter packet which you collected some where- school, committee, interfolio, VE, etc.

Do your TX before AMCAS if you can as they are just a bit slower at everything along the verification process.

Thanks somemom, good to know.

It’s varied so far. My primary was submitted very early and went out with the first batch, but a late letter of recommendation delayed how long I could be complete at schools until several weeks into July.

1) Univ. of South Carolina - I got an invite two days after turning in my secondary, basically turning it in right in time for their first wave of invites.
2) Vanderbilt - I got an invite as part of their first wave; they only give secondaries to those they want to interview so how early I submitted my primary was the main factor.
3) Pittsburgh - I got my invite two weeks after becoming complete; they have been sending out invites consistently since their secondary opened.

The only other two schools I applied to that have sent out invites are Duke (haven’t submitted their monster secondary yet) and UVa (sent out their first wave early this week). I was complete there pretty late, so I don’t expect to hear a decision anytime soon.

Public Service Announcement

I want to thank all the folks posting their experiences on this thread and elsewhere on this forum. A special thanks goes out to those who have started their own threads recently. I appreciate it. Now, I may have warned you that “No good deed goes unpunished” but…I appreciate it. ;)

At its best , the internet can provide first-hand, topical, current information to those individuals (and their families) who may have considerable trouble finding that information elsewhere.

I’m a lawyer by trade so taking a position and being “questioned” about it is old hat to me IRL so, trust me, what I’m about to ask has absolutely nothing to do with me.

Could everybody read these threads with some appreciation of the guts it takes to step out there? With some appreciation that these folks are trying to help? Look. I enjoy a good tussle more than most (and this internet kind removes a lot less skin than I can lose most any weekday IRL) but still…

I’m not getting all “Peace, Love, and Happiness” or “Cumbaya” …and feel free to disagree with the posters… but “listen” with your most generous ears. Respect that they are trying to help. That’s all.

Now back to our regularly scheduled *****ing and moaning. ;)

p.s. Feel free to pummel the “Which pre-med school? Harvard or Yale?” posters. There is no bag limit, no season, and I find it entertaining. ;)

DS got his first interview request on Friday. Pitt invited him and he is happy! Mom is happy too. His interview won’t be until after Sept 30th though. Hopefully he will get some more interview requests soon.

I LOVE kumbaya, and after a couple of glasses of wine,I have NO problem telling random strangers what I think. That being said, I appreciate you Curm, and hope you are still around to help me help my D for TX apps when it is time.

Which pre-med school, “Harvard or Yale?”

Duh, Amherst. :)

p.s. Congrats mom2boys on Pitt interview!!!

mom2boys, big congrats. Pitt looks very impressive.

D was fortunate to get a number of invites early and now nothing in a week. I got spoiled. Yeah. I knew better but still…it happened. Not complaining. Things are going better than I thought they would and I know it’s waaaay early but…still… I was hoping she’d get a few more Texas schools out of the way to save some $ on airfare. She goes back to be a peer leader in Memphis this Saturday so…time to clear some more room on the card. :(

September already has 3 slots filled. I have expressed my concern about missed time from school. D says she has it under control but some of these places ain’t that accessible and will require two nights out. That’s O.K. for a Monday or Friday. Not so hot for a Tuesday.

Any of you vets have any problems with profs letting you have a pass for an interview?

I didn’t have any problems with it, though I had to drop ballet before classes started after I talked to my teacher and he said that it wasn’t feasible to miss that much class. I also scheduled so that I had Friday off, which made things much easier for most classes. Check the MSAR to see when acceptances start to be given out. If they aren’t given out until December or later, feel free to schedule them for October so that you can clump a bunch together (I did a run of four schools that way, just flew to Providence and drove up and down the east coast).

Also, don’t worry about “droughts” in interview offers. I had weeks without them sometimes and then a big flood.

all this time i thought u were a dude lol

I am a dude  (and I’m straight)

It is interesting to me, as DD continues to address secondaries- some that should have been done already and some that are just being released, how nice it is to have at least one interview in her pocket and how random it is that she even applied to that school.

Makes me want to go back and add more ‘safety’ schools to the primary ;)

Who knows? Maybe that random school will turn out to be her dream school. That’s what happened to me. My top choice school (which I’m attending in a week) was only even on my list because I had a letter from the former executive provost of that school. It seemed like a great school when I read about it, but there are just so many great schools and only so much money that I wanted to hand out. Then I interviewed there and boy am I glad that I did!

There is so much good information on this board about the specifics and also so much that can be gleaned from personal experiences that I just want to throw this into the mix for those that for whatever reason are behind in their application paperwork - my daughter was AMCAS processed in a timely way but for a number of reasons was slow on the secondaries. She was offered interviews fairly early on from a number of schools but as she was living overseas at the time she ended up scheduling some interviews for when she was returning home in December. Her last interview was in January. These things all should have hurt her - they didn’t.

Yes, getting everything done earlier rather than later is the best way to go but don’t throw up your hands in despair if it doesn’t work out that way. Just keep plugging.
