2009 AP BIOLOGY Discussion

Dstfan, that’s what I put too lol.

@dstfan: I think I put mutations and geographic isolation as mechanisms of evolution.

1a1, that’s what I did too.

mutations & bottleneck effect

yeah i put mutations and crossing over during meiosis, i thought those were the obvious ones. i don’t know if they’ll count genetic drift, or bottlenecking, or isolation, because i think they were asking for genetic changes on the cellular level that lead to the above things happening. just my thoughts though.

i also drew a line graph and i thought that would be the one showing the correlation best because it was a bell curve.

and for the experiment, i used pH of the water and salinity of the water. i didn’t think on terms of the fish for the control, just the water, but i think age and size work.

4 was begging for you guys to talk about retroviruses and how they work with reverse transcriptase. i think you guys had to mention HIV, (or any other retrovirus for that matter), as they asked for a SPECIFIC (it was caps in the test too) virus that does not follow central dogma.

For the fish lab one, for one of my variables I put size of the section because it’s possible some of the results were off because some fish weren’t able to fit in the section with optimal temperature since there were so many fish already in it. Do you think I’ll get points?

For number 4, I don’t think you had to name a specific one; the FRQ is online lemme see…

The central dogma does not apply to some viruses. Select a specific virus or type of virus and explain how it
deviates from the central dogma.

I want to emphasize the TYPE OF VIRUS part. So i think just explaining retroviruses was ok (which was what I did).

FRQS:
<a href=“Supporting Students from Day One to Exam Day – AP Central | College Board”>Supporting Students from Day One to Exam Day – AP Central | College Board;

Where’s the online frqs?

GAH! I’m, so stupid! I wrote AIDS instead of HIV!!! Darn stress-induced mental blanking out. I also didn’t specifically mention reverse transcriptase although I aluded to that general process.

For the fish, I made a bar graph, since line graphs are generally used when data is over time. The two variables I used were age and sickness. For the physiological effects I said dissolved oxygen and something about the optimum temperature for internal chemical reactions.

@Helljumper - It said the fish were placed in the tank one at a time… I almost did that too, though, but then I reread it.

i put natural selection and mutation as modes of evolution

omg the marine animals still **** me off.

were you just supposed to pick a random virus? I said the cold virus…
but I did write a lot about how they have nucleic acids, protein coat, would I get points off for writing the wrong info?
and I did not know how to draw a cladogram lmao
evolution- I put homologous structures, and something else
genetic variation- put mutations (dna substitution, deletion), and genetic drift (bottleneck effect)

I did not know what the central dogma is nor what the virus thing was asking for…

i completelyyyyyyy messed up the trophic level thing, i missed the part that said we had to label specific animals lol :X

i thought the 4th question was the best one, i’m hoping i get the most points from there

for #1: i put size of fish for uncontrolled variables and the temp. of the water could change over time. would that work? the fact that i said due to water pressue, warmer water would move to colder water and even out the temp?

2: phytoplankton, shrimp, fish, shark

3: mutation and sexual reproduction, homology and embyonic development

4: what if i put hiv virus and didn’t mention reverse transcriptase? also, what did you guys put for methods of protein regulation?

@tomjonesistheman

“the flow of genetic information from DNA to protein in eukaryotic cells is called the central dogma of biology” -first line of FRQ 4

wow the protein regulation one was so vague.

fromNJ:

I did the latter of what you did for #1, i just could not think of another variable so I just decided to move on.

4 I didn’t mention reverse transcriptase either so hopefully they will give me points for it being implied in the process.

yea for the trophic levels- phytoplankton, zooplankton, beluga whale, killer whale

dam i didnt mention reverse transcriptase either.

I still described why it didn’t follow the dogma and reverse transcriptase was like included in there but just not named.
