2009 Fundraising by University/College

The alumni giving rate for most of the top schools is laughably low.

A substantial amount of money raised comes from a small proportion of alumni. One wonders about the rest.

What’s laughable about $300 million and more bucks in the bank? If you can hit your goals and not bother most people with incessant mailings and phone calls sounds like win win to me. 80-20 rule you know. Concentrate on the rainmakers. It cost more than it’s worth to get those small donations.

Its interesting to note that the College of William & Mary had its best fundraising year ever in the middle of the great recession.

Dumb question…

Is this money strictly from donors/alumni to the capital campaign?

Would this include donations to specific departments or to purchase naming rights?

True. It’s really the ungratefulness and indifference that troubles me.

Not dumb at all. This includes all current year receipts (not pledges) for all fundraising from alumni, non alums, corporations and foundations etc. It would include money raised for the new football stadium or a new library or just going into the general fund and or endowment for the school and individual depts. It would not include naming rights in most cases except LARGE donors usually do get naming right to buildings, etc. It would not include things like contracts for sports equipment (Nike exclusive) and from contract rights to broadcasting games and the like (I think). Some areas might be a bit gray.
