2009 UK Applications

These are coming up in the next few months (September/Ocotber for Oxbridge). Where are people applying? When are you starting the process? Questions, comments, concerns?

I’m still debating about applying to schools in the UK. Where are you applying and for which course?

I’m gonna visit in two weeks so we’ll see what I actually end up doing buuuttt i plan to apply to PPE at Oxford and some econ course at LSE.

I’m planning on applying to PPE at Oxford and haven’t settled exactly on the courses, but will also apply to St. Andrews, Edinburgh, LSE and University College London.

Some UK universities that are worth applying as an international student:

Cambridge
Oxford
Imperial
LSE
Warwick
UCL
Durham
St Andrews
Edinburgh
Bristol
York
Bath
Nottingham
King’s College
Newcastle Upon Tyne
Manchester
Birmingham
Cardiff

Newcastle Upon Tyne… you mean Newcastle? Is there a particular order to that list? I hope not, Warwick above UCL and Edinburgh…. yeah right!

Anyway, i dispute this very silly post. No university is worth applying to unless it offers the course/modules you’re interested in.

I plan on applying in October or November. I studied abroad my junior year, and won’t be able to take my SATs until October 5th. So I’m not really sure how I should go about with submitting my scores, can I apply with UCAS and have collegeboard submit my scores afterwords or do I have to wait until I actually get my scores back? I want to apply as early as possible, as I heard it’s easier to secure a spot that way. I’m planning on applying to Cardiff, Queen’s University Belfast, Durham, Aberystwtyh, and Southampton and studying International Business with German.

SamualUK,

My list wasn’t in order, obviously. But, yeah, I would personally rank Warwick above UCL, but that’s my personal opinion. However, most people in the UK view them in the same league. Warwick and UCL are head-to-head as a whole.

No they’re not lol. Warwick students have an annoying habit of pretending their university is one of the best in the country, in fact it is nowhere near - so many Oxbridge/London rejects go there they all think they’re something special.

PPE to oxford…i’m thinking magdalen college? i’m still researching though…

For those of you planning on applying PPE, how do you take the placement test? It says on the course requirement page that the test is administered in schools in the UK on a certain day only, so I’m not sure how international students can meet that criteria.

Thanks!

@julia.tran: you have to talk to your counselor and arrange to take it at school. i think your counselor will talk to cambridge testing company or whatever and get the job done.

Good luck to everyone applying in the UK this year. I just got my IB results back, and will be attending the University of Edinburgh this fall, for physics! If anyone has any questions about applying to Cambridge or through UCAS as an American student, feel free to contact me!

Yes, I think we all have questions  any general tips to start out?

Well, for one, make sure you look at the courses to which you are applying really carefully, as well as the universities. You don’t want to end up applying to places where you dislike the university and the course you are studying.

Secondly, similarly to the US, apply to a range of places. It’ll do you no good if you get the same offer from everywhere, because then if you miss it, you’re screwed.
