2010-2011 Med school applicants and their parents

Congrats to your daughter WayOutWestMom !!

D. got hers also. Sticking to her list. However, she got one spot in her pocket - got enough for Med. School in her combined program. She will apply to few others.

"Some one from the south (GA) may be an appealing OOS student for TX.
Why would someone from the south. "

I am making an educated guess, it seems that many schools want to maximize yield and there seems to be a perception that students who live closer are more likely to matriculate, so a person from the south may be more likely that a student from Maine or Alaska to attend the school in TX.

Just want to say thanks to some of the veterans from years past who are still helping out here. Lot of very helpful information.

congrats to your D wayoutwestmom. I only wish. We’re still out two references with nothing seeming to happen on either. Not sure what plan B should be since DS says that the premed advisor reference will be good since he had her for several classes. She just doesn’t seem to be getting around to writing it.

MiamiDAP, is your daughter applying to other schools because she does not like her current med school program? Or did she go to a combined program to have something guaranteed and then look for other schools…?

I am asking because I never thought of that possibility, in terms of a strategy…

I’m kind of confused about secondaries (med schools have a lot of different ways to do it, I wish it were more standardized).

Some schools like Harvard have a “supplementary application.” Is this their secondary, or is it different? Do I fill it out now, or wait for an invite?

About what time am I supposed to receive most of my secondaries?

Also, do I have to assign LORs on AMCAS to schools before receiving secondaries?

Harvard’s “supplementary” is their secondary. I would wait for an invite, although I know that some people are submitting them without being invited it. Most of the secondaries come come out throughout july and august and no, you do not need to assign LORs on AMCAS to schools before receiving secondaries. They are usually requested as part of the ‘secondary’ application.

But why wouldn’t you want to assign the LORs and get it over with?

Supplementary = Secondary

Depends on how much work you want to do haha - if you know the school doesn’t screen, then by all means fill it out now. But if they do, its best to wait for the invite.

No.

Thanks for the helpful answers about secondaries. I also have a question about what happens post acceptance. Many schools only give you an offer for a few weeks- what happens if you are still waiting on hearing back from other schools? Like what if school A gives you an offer really early and gives you 2 weeks to respond, when you are still waiting on schools B, C, and D, which may give you an offer after the 2 weeks is over.

Just take it. You can accept as many offers as you want before May 15th. By May 15th, you need to withdraw from all but one school. Schools report all their acceptances to AMCAS, and you can’t be holding more than one acceptance after May 15th.

If you get in to another school after the 15th, then you have to decide which one to keep.

The language in this situation is very confusing. By accepting a spot, you are not actually committing to attend. You’re just accepting the fact that they have admitted you. You’re permitted to hold on to multiple of these acceptances until May 15 (before which they should not, as a matter of manners, ask you for a deposit).

And it is designed to be so.;)

MyOpinion,
“Or did she go to a combined program to have something guaranteed and then look for other schools…?”

Yes, this reason. It is too many variables when you start in UG. It gave her great peace of mind to know that she needs average MCAT to have a spot. She does not like urban location of her Med. School. If she does not get to any other, she is OK though. There are 8 schools on her list, including the one in her program. We believe that she is a strong candidate for at least one more school. Will see.

MiamiDAP, congrats to her for all the hard work and best of luck for the rest of the cycle!

Thank you, MyOpinion! The same to you!

Another question, will most med schools contact me/send me information via email? If they do send information through mail, will they also send a copy to the permanent address?

I am asking because I put down my school mailbox as my preferred address, and the school mailbox is closed during the summer.

Yes

Nope, so make sure you keep your mailing address updated with AMCAS (one of the few things you can change after submission).

Well DS has 3 secondaries to work on. Still no news on the two missing LOR’s but he sent follow-up to both folks and is meeting with his PI today so maybe some news on that one. We are assuming that the secondaries won’t be looked at until the LOR’s are there but he’s still working on the essays for two of them. The third just wants money and some more info but no essay.

Just get off the phone with DS. A pleasant surprise (considering the amount of his preparation for MCAT this year): his LizzyM score is now 78. Do not know the score of each MCAT section though. Hopefully, every section score is double-digit.

Hopefully, some medical schools in his list will show him love at the beginning of next year. His current list is basically curm’s D’s list (Thanks! curm), minus some supercompetitive, research-heavy schools. When he needed to come up with the list of schools (He had done very little research on this by himself before that.), we showed him that list and told him this list was from a very successful applicant who had done extensive work to come up with this list. He agreed to put in most of the schools from that list. Do not know whether he revises his list recently though.
